Mediaevum - Medieval Poetry, O Fortuna

O Fortuna

O Fortuna O fortune

O Fortuna velut luna statu variabilis, semper crescis aut decrescis; vita detestabilis nunc obdurat et tunc curat ludo mentis aciem, egestatem, potestatem dissolvit ut glaciem. O Fortune, like the moon you are changeable, ever waxing and waning; hateful life is tough now and then its game, poverty and power like ice.

Sors immanis et inanis, rota tu volubilis, status malus, vana salus semper dissolubilis, obumbrata et velata michi quoque niteris; nunc per ludum dorsum nudum fero tui sceleris. Fate-monstrous and empty, you whirling wheel, you whirling wheel, stand malevolent, well-being is vain and always fades to nothing, shadowed and veiled you plague me too; By now the game back bare your assault.

The fate of health and virtue now opposed to me is affection and failure always in trouble. Hac in hora sine mora corde pulsum tangite; quod per sortem sternit fortem, mecum omnes plangite! At this hour, without delay, touch the pulse of the heart; that through the lot spreads the strong, mourn with me all!
