Once upon a time, there was a river called Uonogawa in a village called Sekiyama in the country of Echigo (Echigo no Kuni → Niigata Prefecture), and this river is always tentative. The bridge was over.
The reason for this is that the river has a fast flow, so even a slight heavy rain will cause the bridge to be washed away.
That's why there was always a temporary bridge over it.

However, the temporary bridge had a bad footing, and the bridge froze on cold winter days, so many people who slipped and fell into the river died every year.

At the outskirts of this Sekiyama village, there was a Buddhist priest named Genkyo, who was over 60 years old.
