Por qué los españoles hablan tan rápido

Hola, chicos, ¿qué tal? Bienvenidos y bienvenidas a Español Con Juan. Yo soy Juan. Yo soy profesor de español y este es un podcast en español, solo en español, para aprender español.

Siempre que puedo pongo la transcripción de nuestro podcast en nuestro blog porque creo que escuchar español es muy importante, escuchar a menudo, regularmente, con frecuencia, todos los días o casi todos los días, escuchar español, digo, es muy importante para aprender español; pero, aún mejor, todavía mejor, es escuchar y leer, escuchar y leer al mismo tiempo. Eso es aún mejor.

Yo os aconsejo escuchar el podcast, nuestro podcast, dos veces. La primera vez simplemente escuchar de forma relajada, intentando simplemente entender la idea general de lo que digo, las ideas principales. Incluso si no entendéis todo al cien por cien. No importa. Estoy seguro de que habrá muchas palabras o expresiones que no entendáis, pero yo creo que, en general, más o menos, podéis entender la idea general de lo que estoy diciendo. Quizás no entendáis algunos detalles, no sé, una preposición, alguna palabra nueva, quizás no entendáis bien cómo se dice o qué significa una expresión coloquial… bueno, no importa. Yo creo que si seguís Español con Juan, si seguís este podcast es porque tenéis al menos un nivel intermedio de español, al menos un nivel intermedio, y si tenéis un nivel intermedio entonces yo creo que podéis entender la mayor parte de lo que digo, al menos, como digo, la idea principal.

Entonces, como iba diciendo. Yo os aconsejo escuchar cada episodio dos veces. La primera vez simplemente escuchar lo que digo e intentar entender, intentar comprender la idea general. Después, os aconsejo escuchar el mismo episodio una segunda vez, pero leyendo al mismo tiempo la transcripción. De este modo podéis ver cómo están escritas las palabras, qué preposiciones uso… si es necesario podéis hacer una pausa, parar la grabación y buscar en el diccionario alguna palabra clave, alguna palabra clave que no entendáis… en fin, yo creo que leer y escuchar al mismo tiempo es muy importante para aprender español y espero que uséis las transcripciones que pongo en el blog, en nuestro blog 1001 Reasons To Learn Spanish.

No siempre puedo poner la transcripción, es verdad. A veces no tengo tiempo de poner la transcripción, pero en muchos casos sí, en muchos casos podéis encontrar la transcripción de los podcast que hago en nuestro blog.

En fin, bueno, aparte de todo esto, aparte de esta pequeña introducción sobre cómo usar mejor nuestro podcast para aprender español, aparte de todo esto, ¿qué tal? ¿Cómo va la semana? Espero que todo vaya bien.

Yo esta semana he estado comiéndome el coco. Sí, me he comido mucho el coco. No sé si sabéis qué significa esta expresión: comerse el coco. Significa darle vueltas a la cabeza, pensar mucho sobre un tema, estar casi obsesionado con algo, no parar de pensar en algo… Bueno, pues yo esta semana me he estado comiendo el coco pensando en el curso, en el nuevo curso que estoy preparando. Ya os he dicho, ¿no? Que estoy preparando un nuevo curso para enseñar expresiones coloquiales, expresiones coloquiales, como, por ejemplo, comerse el coco, mira tú por dónde… porque las expresiones coloquiales se usan muchísimo en el español informal, en el español coloquial, en el español digamos de la calle, el español que se habla normalmente en la calle.

Muchos estudiantes me dicen: “Juan, a ti te entiendo muy bien, pero no puedo entender la radio, ni puedo entender la televisión, ni puedo entender las películas en español o las series de la tele, ni puedo entender a los españoles cuando hablan… ¿Por qué? ¿Por qué te puedo entender a ti y a ellos no? ¡Los españoles hablan muy rápido!”

Bueno, lo que pasa, a veces, no sé, a veces… voy a intentar responder a esta pregunta aunque no sé si es fácil.

En primer lugar, yo no creo que los españoles hablen muy deprisa. Yo no creo que los españoles hablen más deprisa que los franceses, que los italianos, que los ingleses… por ejemplo, estos días estoy viendo una serie de televisión que me gusta mucho, en inglés, se trata de una serie que estoy viendo en la BBC. Se llama Keeping Faith. La historia se desarrolla, tiene lugar, digamos, en Gales, en el País de Gales. Bueno, pues, sinceramente, me cuesta muchísimo comprender qué dicen los personajes, los actores. Yo llevo viviendo en Reino Unido más de 20 años. ¡Más de 20 años! Y no puedo entender lo que dicen estos personajes porque…. Porque hablan superdeprisa, hablan a una velocidad increíblemente rápida… Tengo que ver la serie con subtítulos, con subtítulos en inglés, pero aún así me cuesta muchísimo trabajo entender lo que pasa, entender lo que dicen porque incluso los subtítulos pasan a mucha velocidad y no me da tiempo a terminar de leer una frase cuando desaparecen de la pantalla y aparece una nueva frase… en fin, lo que quiero decir es que cuando aprendemos un nuevo idioma todos tenemos la impresión de que los nativos hablan muy deprisa. En mi caso, en el caso del inglés, yo puedo entender bien el inglés de las películas cuando se trata de actores ingleses o de actores norteamericanos, porque estoy acostumbrado a ellos. Y como estoy acostumbrado a su inglés, pues me parece que hablan a una velocidad normal. Pero si me cambian el acento, si me pongo a ver una película con un acento diferente, con un acento galés o escocés o australiano, con una cento inglés que no conozco bien… entonces me parece, tengo la impresión de que hablan muy deprisa… pero yo no creo que sea así, yo no creo que en realidad hablen muy deprisa, hablan como todo el mundo, hay gente que habla más deprisa que otros, pero eso no tiene mucho que ver con el idioma o con el país, ¿no? Es una cuestión personal o del contexto… en fin, que yo creo que lo que pasa cuando aprendemos un nuevo idioma es que tenemos la impresión de que los nativos hablan muy deprisa, pero es solo una impresión. Lo que pasa es que nuestro cerebro tarda más tiempo del normal en procesar las palabras, en entender los sonidos… No sé si me explico. Si conoces muy bien un idioma, si hablas con otra persona en, por ejemplo, en tu lengua materna, tu cerebro no necesita mucho tiempo para analizar las palabras que la otra persona dice. Es un proceso casi instantáneo, muy rápido. Pero si hablamos con otra persona en un idioma que no es el nuestro, entonces, nuestro cerebro tiene que pasar más tiempo intentando analizar, intentando descifrar qué significan las palabras que la otra persona está diciendo. El problema es que mientras tu cerebro está analizando una palabra, el nativo, la persona con la que estás hablando, ya ha dicho otra palabra y otra y otra… Entonces, tenemos la impresión de que el nativo habla muy rápido, pero no es así, no es que el nativo hable muy rápido, es que nuestro cerebro va muy despacio. Como no conoce bien las palabras, como no está acostumbrado al idioma, necesita más tiempo para procesar la información que le llega, para analizar qué significan las palabras, para descifrar los sonidos que escucha…

Entonces, claro, es normal que a mi entendáis y no entendáis a los españoles digamos “normales”. ¿Por qué? Pues porque yo pongo mucha atención en las palabras que uso. No tanto en la velocidad con la que hablo, sino en las palabras que uso. Yo sé, por mi experiencia como profesor, yo sé qué palabras puedo usar y qué palabras tengo que evitar cuando hablo con mis estudiantes de español.

Yo llevo muchos años dando clase, dando clase de español. Doy clase de español a estudiantes de diferentes niveles. Cada día tengo que dar clase a estudiantes de, por ejemplo, estudiantes principiantes. Voy a la universidad donde doy clase y, a las nueve de la mañana, por ejempo, entro en clase y doy clase a estudiantes principiantes, que llevan solo unas cuantas semanas aprendiendo español. Yo sé qué palabras usar, qué expresiones entienden y qué expresiones tengo que evitar porque no las entienden. Luego voy a clase de un nivel intermedio y entonces ya sé qué expresiones o qué tipo de estructura gramatical, qué vocabulario puedo usar con ellos para que me entiendan… y así, luego voy a una clase de nivel avanzado y entonces igual, me adapto, adapto el lenguaje que uso al nivel de los estudiantes que tengo en clase.

Y lo mismo hago con este podcast o con los vídeos que publico en YouTube. Uso el vocabulario, las expresiones y la gramática que sé que pueden entender los estudiantes de nivel intermedio de español. Yo cuando hago mi podcast, este podcast, o cuando hago vídeos para YouTube, siempre tengo en mente un tipo de estudiante: un estudiante de nivel intermedio, de nivel B1 o nivel B2 de español. Y por eso muchas veces me escriben comentarios diciendo: “¡Hablas muy despacio! ¡Me aburro! ¡Deberías hablar más deprisa!”. Bueno, lo que pasa no es que yo hable muy despacio, lo que pasa es que simplemente tú tienes un nivel de español demasiado alto para los podcasts o vídeos que yo hago. Simplemente eso. Otros estudiantes me dicen: “¡Hablas demasiado deprisa! ¡No entiendo!” Claro, igual, no es que yo hable demasiado deprisa, es que quizás tu nivel es demasiado bajo para los videos que yo hago.

Total, lo que yo quería decir con todo esto, que ya me estoy enrollando, como siempre, ¿no? Me enrollo y al final pierdo el hilo de lo que estaba diciendo… lo que yo estaba diciendo es que si me entendéis a mí y no entendéis a los nativos, a los españoles, no es porque los españoles hablen muy deprisa, sino porque vuestro cerebro no está aún preparado para enfrentarse con el español que hablan los nativos y necesita más tiempo para procesar el español que hablan ellos, no porque hablen muy deprisa, sino porque no conocéis las palabras, no conocéis el vocabulario que ellos utilizan.

Se trata fundamentalmente de un problema de vocabulario. Quiero decir que si tú conoces una palabra, si tú conoces bien una palabra, no importa cuanto deprisa yo diga esa palabra, no importa si el nativo habla deprisa o despacio, tú vas a entenderla bien.

Por ejemplo, recuerda el primer dia que fuiste a clase de español y el profesor dijo: ¡Hola! ¿Qué tal? ¿Cómo te llamas?” El primer día, la primera semana, las primeras semanas incluso, cuando yo digo a mis estudiantes de español, a mis estudiantes de nivel principiante, esta frase, “¡Hola! ¿Qué tal? ¿Cómo te llamas?” tengo que hablar superdespacio, tengo que vocalizar muy bien, tengo que pronunciar muy bien cada sílaba: ¡Ho-la! ¿Qué-tal? ¿Cómo-te-lllamas?” Y ¿sabéis qué me responden ellos? Normalmente me dicen, “Juan, por favor, habla más despacio, no entiendo” o “¿Puedes repetir?” Les parece que hablo muy deprisa cuando en realidad estoy hablando muy, muy despacio. Pero ellos tienen la impresión de que todo pasa muy deprisa… ¿Por qué? Porque no conocen bien el vocabulario, porque no están acostumbrados a esas palabras y su cerebro tiene que pasar mucho tiempo, tiene que dedicar mucho tiempo a analizar qué demonios estoy diciendo…

Pero después de unas semanas, cuando ya se han acostumbrado a esa frase muy bien. Porque yo cada vez que entro en clase digo “¡Hola! ¿Qué tal? ¿Cómo te llamas?” Entonces, digo, al cabo de tres o cuatro semanas, yo puedo decir esa frase muy deprisa, yo puedo decir esa frase a toda velocidad, a una velocidad exagerada… yo puedo decir “¡Hola!¿Qué tal?¿Cómotellamas? ¡Hola!¿Qué tal?¿Cómotellamas? ¡Hola!¿Qué tal?¿Cómotellamas?” y ellos me entienden perfectamente… ¿por qué? Porque no es un problema de velocidad, no es un problema de rapidez… el problema es el vocabulario, el problema es entender el vocabulario. Una vez que el cerebro conoce las palabras, una vez que el cerebro se ha acostumbrado a un tipo de palabras… ya no importa la velocidad, ya no importa si la persona habla despacio o deprisa… lo va a entender, lo va a entender mucho mejor…

Obviamente hay otros factores que entran en juego. Quiero decir, es importante, por ejemplo, tener en cuenta el acento de la persona, su pronunciación, la entonación… una misma palabra puede sonar de forma muy diferente si se pronuncia con un acento u otro, con una entonación u otra.

De hecho, ahora recuerdo una ocasión, una ocasión en la que yo estaba en clase de italiano. Sí, hace muchos años, cuando yo empezaba a aprender italiano, cuando estaba empezando a aprender italiano, iba a clase por las noches, creo que era por la tarde, ya tarde. Era lo que se llama una clase nocturna. Creo que terminaba a eso de las nueve… ¿Veis? Ya me estoy enrollando otra vez… bueno, lo que pasó fue que en aquella clase había una chica argentina. Yo no lo sabía, pero un día que la chica estaba sentada a mi lado, me dijo algo, algo que yo no entendí. Entonces, le pedí que me lo repitiera… hablábamos español, ¿eh? Entre nosotros hablábamos español y por supuesto no había ningún problema, nos entendíamos perfectamente, pero en aquella ocasión la chica me dijo algo que yo no entendía. Tuve que pedirle varias veces que me lo repitiese, no sé, muchas veces, cuatro o cinco veces… Al final entendí. Simplemente me estaba diciendo: “me llamo Julia” pero yo no la entendía porque pronunciaba la ll, bueno, como la pronuncian los argentinos, ¿no? Es casi una ch, ella decía algo así como mechamo, me chamo…

Total, esto viene a cuento porque lo que yo quería decir es que el acento, la pronunciación, la forma en que se pronuncian las palabras también influye mucho a la hora de entender lo que un nativo, un nativo de español en este caso, nos dice.

Y esto me ha pasado otra veces, ¿eh? Cuando he estado en Galicia, por ejemplo, cuando fui a hacer el Camino de Santiago, a veces he tenido problemas para entender lo que estaban diciendo simplemente porque no estaba acostumbrado al acento, a la pronunciación.

Resumiendo, lo que quiero decir es que cuando nos parece que los nativos hablan muy deprisa, en realidad lo que pasa muy a menudo es que simplemente no conocemos el vocabulario, no estamos familiarizados con el vocabulario que están usando los nativos. O, también puede pasar, no estamos familiarizados con el acento de la persona, con su forma de hablar y entonces puede ser que una palabra que conocemos muy bien nuestro cerebro no la reconoce. En esos caso, en casos así, la gente, los estudiantes de español suelen decir: “¡Ay, qué deprisa hablan los españoles!” y no, lo que pasa, lo que puede pasar es que, simplemente, o no conocemos el vocabulario o no estamos familiarizados con el acento de la persona que habla.

En fin, ¿por qué os cuento todo esto? ¿por qué os estoy contando todo esto? Creo que he perdido el hilo de lo que estaba diciendo. Me pasa a menudo. Empiezo a hablar de un tema y pierdo el hilo, me olvido de lo que quería decir…

¡Ah, sí, ahora me acuerdo! Estaba diciendo que esta semana me he estado comiendo el coco con este nuevo curso que estoy preparando, el curso Español de la Calle, en el que quiero enseñar algunas expresiones coloquiales.

¿Por qué me estoy comiendo el coco con este curso? Porque, bueno, yo creo que muchas veces los estudiantes de español no entienden a los nativos simplemente porque los nativos usan palabras y expresiones que normalmente no están en los libros de texto que se estudian en las escuelas de español.

Es lo que quería decir antes de enrollarme y perder el hilo. Lo que yo pienso es que, vale, a menudo los estudiantes de español, estoy hablando de estudiantes de español de un nivel digamos al menos intermedio, intermedio alto o incluso avanzado, que me dicen, Juan, no entiendo a los nativos, los españoles hablan muy deprisa… Bueno, como he dicho antes, a veces es un problema de la pronunciación, del acento, que no están acostumbrados al acento de una determinada persona… pero a menudo lo que pasa es que los españoles usan un español coloquial, un español de la calle, que no se estudia normalmente en clase, que no se estudia en los libros.

Entonces, si tú vas a España y quieres hablar con los españoles, con los españoles que vas a encontrar en la calle… pues, bueno, el español o la española, el chico o el hombre español, la chica o la mujer española que vas a ver en la calle no te va a hablar como te habla tu libro, el libro que usas en clase. Va a usar palabras, expresiones, que tú no has oído nunca. Y eso es lo que te va a hacer muy difícil entender lo que dicen.

Por ejemplo, en un libro, en el diálogo de un libro, puedes encontrar la frase:

¡No te preocupes, no pasa nada!

Pero en la vida real, es posible que escuches:

¡tío, no te comas el coco que no es pa tanto!

¿Entendéis?

La gente no habla como en los libros, la gente usa expresiones como tio, comerse el coco, no es para tanto… Esas son expresiones coloquiales que se usan muy a menudo, todos los días y que si no las entiendes en una conversación pues estás perdido.

Otro ejemplo. En un libro, alguien dice:

“¡En este bar hay mucha gente. Nos vamos!” lo que es gramaticalmente correcto.

Sin embargo, posiblemente en la calle, en la vida real, lo que vas a escuchar es:

¡Esto está hasta los topes! Nos piramos!”

Estar hasta los topes y pirarse son expresiones muy informales que normalmente no se estudian en los libros, pero que se usan muy a menudo en la calle. Estar hasta los topes quiere decir que hay mucha gente y pirarse es similar a irse, a dejar un lugar.

En fin, no sé si entendéis lo que quiero decir. Lo que quiero decir es que a menudo el problema para entender el español que usan los nativos no es la velocidad, no es que los nativos hablan muy deprisa, sino que no conocemos el vocabulario que usan, el vocabulario que realmente usan. Muchas veces estudiamos solo el vocabulario que hay en los libros de texto, pero en la vida real nadie habla como en los libros de texto. Hay que conocer las expresiones y el vocabulario que se usa en la vida real, en la vida cotidiana de cada día.

Entonces, a lo que iba, esta semana me la he pasado comiéndome mucho el coco con este curso de Español de la Calle porque he estado intentando ver qué expresiones voy a incluir en el curso.

Claro, el problema es que hay tantísimas expresiones… hay cientos y cientos de expresiones que podría incluir y, claro, eso sería imposible. No puedo incluir en el curso todas las posibles expresiones del español de la calle. Tengo que hacer una selección.

Y eso es lo que he hecho esta semana. Me la he pasado comiéndome el coco a ver qué expresiones incluyo en el curso y cuáles no. Dentro de unos días, cuando esté lista, cuando termine de hacer la lista, os la mandaré por email para que me digáis qué os parece, si os parecen fáciles, difíciles, si ya las conocéis o no… en fin, para que me deis vuestra opinión.

Pero esa no es la parte que más me preocupa ahora. Al fin y al cabo, seleccionar las expresiones coloquiales que puedo enseñar en el curso es algo que, bueno, pensando un poco y quizás contando también con vuestra ayuda puedo llegar sin dificultad. El problema, el problema es cómo enseñar esas expresiones de una forma eficaz. Ese es el problema.

He estado mirando libros, páginas de internet, vídeos en YouTube y en la mayoría de los casos lo que hay son listas, listas de expresiones coloquiales. Y a mí, la verdad, las listas de palabras no me gustan mucho. No me parece que se pueda aprender bien un idioma aprendiendo listas de palabras.

Yo en el curso que estoy preparando no quiero dar simplemente listas de expresiones. Eso sería muy fácil, ¿no? Imaginaos. Puedo dar listas, muchas listas, puedo organizar las expresiones en diferentes categorías, en diferentes secciones y nada, listo, teminado el curso. Supongo que también podría añadir algunos ejercicios, pero, bueno, la verdad es que yo no creo que ese sea el mejor modo de aprender, de aprender estas expresiones coloquiales.

Yo quiero hacer algo diferente, quiero preparar actividades que realmente sirvan para aprender a usar estas expresiones. Y por eso me estoy comiendo el coco. Porque no es fácil, ¿eh? No es nada fácil pensar en qué actividades usar… yo llevo muchos años dando clase de español, pero la mayor parte de mi experiencia es en las clases físicas, trabajando cara a cara con los estudiantes… tengo muchas actividades para trabajar con mis estudiantes en clase, pero enseñar español en internet, en un curso online, eso es diferente. Muy diferente. Tengo que adaptar las actividades que uso en clase y eso no siempre es fácil, no señor, no es fácil.

En fin, que llevo toda la semana comiéndome el coco con estos temas.

No me quejo, ¿eh? No me quejo. En el fondo me gusta. En el fondo me gusta comerme el coco. Me gusta pensar, darle vueltas a las cosas…

En fin, ya para terminar, os resumo lo que he dicho hoy porque creo que, como siempre, me he vuelto a enrollar, he perdido el hilo y ya no sé ni de qué estaba hablando.

Que no, que no me parece que los españoles hablen muy rápido o que, por lo menos no me parece que los españoles hablen más rápido que los italianos, los franceses o los rusos. Es todo una cuestión de cuánto se conoce el vocabulario, de cuánto se conoce el vocabulario que usan los nativos y de estar familiarizado con el acento y la pronunciación de la persona con quien hablamos.

No sé qué pensáis, pero esa es mi idea. Y por eso, por eso precisamente, me he puesto a preparar este curso sobre el Español de la Calle: porque creo que muchos estudiantes de español no entienden a los nativos, no entienden a los españoles, no porque los españoles hablen muy deprisa, sino porque no conocen el vocabulario informal, las expresiones coloquiales que se usan normalmente, las expresiones que usa la gente digamos normal en el día a día… sencillamente porque son expresiones que normalmente no se estudian, no se ven en los libros de texto, en los libros para aprender español.

¡Jesús de mi vida! Creo que hoy he hecho el episodio más largo de nuestro podcast. Me pongo a hablar, me enrollo, y no veas, me lío, pierdo el hilo y se me va el santo al cielo…
