This is tricky! In short, you can think it means “for one’s sake.” “面子” itself means “情面”

Case 1:
Let’s say the guys lives your next door are nice people. They alway offer their help when you need, however their dog is an nasty crazy animal. You and your wife had a conversation:

“The dogs next door are a real nuisance. I couldn’t sleep at all last night.”
“Tell me about it! I almost got bitten this morning. 要不是看在他主人的份上,我才不會放過牠呢!”

Case 2:
In a company social party, two employees were arguing and almost started a fight. Their manager, John, came over and tried to stop them. John said, “別吵了! 看在我的面子,你們就別吵了吧!”

If they kept fighting, it embarrassed the whole sales department, especially John because he is their direct manager.
if you see "我的"面子, it often means one has higher social status.( but not always)

Hope I didn’t make you feel more confused. Sometimes people say 賣面子 instead of 給我面子
Another phrase: “你這樣讓我很沒面子耶!” (John in case 2 can say that)
