I see a lot of this and cannot understand why/how one decides to include the “ja” in a sentence. “Die Schranke öffnet sich, denn ich habe ja bezahlt.” What does the “ja” do for the speaker and listener? Many German particles confuse me.

I did a bachelors course on particles once. I remember it well because the exam was at 9:30am on the day after my 21st birthday. The day before, i.e. on my birthday, I had a rather rough plasma astrophysics exam at 13:30 and I studied for the entire time between the two exams without sleeping a wink. Those were the days!
