Translation of "dale"

I’m hearing the Spanish word “dale” in a lot of Latin pop music. Can anyone offer a translation??

Literally something like “give to it.” But since it’s kind of slangy or colloquial, I’ve seen it translated as “hit it” or “c’mon.” It’s an encouragement to do something. At birthday parties and some other social events I attended in Mexico we would chant “dale dale dale, no pierdas el tino,” etc. while someone was taking swings at the piñata. I’ve also heard it said by a passenger to a driver to encourage him to go faster, and in similar situations.
