I think that adding “do you” to the original sentence makes it grammatically correct.

Why make them believe that? just makes the phrasing simpler (and the question less direct) by not attaching ‘you’ to the question. Why would anyone want to make them believe that?
If you want to make the question more direct, you should add ‘would you want to’ rather than ‘do you.’
