A: I wish it weren’t true.
B: Well, it isn’t.
A: If you could prove it, we wouldn’t be huddled in here, just us chickens.

Question: I don’t understand what “chickens” means in this sentence.

It’s from an old story where a farmer suspects there’s somebody stealing his chickens and the chicken thief replies back “There aint nobody here but us chickens”. It means the chickens aren’t really chickens but somebody doing something they shouldn’t be doing.

There’s also this popular song which tells the story.
