Check in on... and check in with

I saw these two phrases:

  1. check in on… and 2) check in with…
    and can’t tell the difference between them (the prepositions on and with).
    Do you use them often?

they meaning is quite similar

I need to check in on my grandfather
I need to check in with my grandfather

in this example, “on” implies check if they are ok. “with” implies responsibility or progress

in the examples you posted:

  1. Carry has not been looking after her daughter and the person asking her is implying that she has been ignoring her.
  2. Frank looks like he is looking for answers from someone else. he needs answers (the progress) from these people.

They are used frequently enough, but not daily or even weekly. Hopefully that helps
