My Swedish husband pronounces “kör” differently when it means “drive” than when it means “choir”. How do we get these definitions and pronunciations separated?
It’s the context - and the pronunciation - that will tell you which one he means. He might very well say “Jag kör (shör) till kören nu”. There’s little chance of muddling up the meanings. He will never use the “choir” pronunciation for “drive” because they are always pronounced differently. I think the reason they are pronounced differently is that the word for “drive” is a “native” Swedish word which follows the Swedish pronunciation rule for “k” before “ö”, whereas “choir” is a word that Swedish has imported from French - “choeur” - together with its French pronunciation, which is exactly the same. Is this useful?
I wonder if she meant that the TTS engine doesn’t differentiate the two words and thus you get single pronunciation regardless of the context and (perhaps) you also get a single meaning when you add a lingq for the word? Just a guess. I haven’t run into them yet since I just started here but I have noticed this issue with other TTS engines in other apps and sites.
Oops, yes you’re right, though no doubt dvortygirl will confirm. I evidently got into mansplaining mode there! It is a limitation of the site that it is hard to separate the different meanings and homphones/homonyms, particularly as learning by context is in fact the whole point, and yet you can’t easily specify the context associated with each meaning. So when you come to review your vocabulary you only get one context.
