Reset the word boundaries in Japanese

Is there any editor’s pencil or whatever to reset the word boundaries in Japanese? It doesn’t bother me as I have a good grasp of the language. But I could help others as I study.

If you are talking about how the lingQ system doesn’t always pick up the whole word in Japanese, I find this kind of bothersome myself as I can’t get the flash cards to rellect the actual word I wanted to highlight. I just posted this in the why don’t more people lingQ thread. Maybe this pencil thing would help with this issue I have too.

Actually it is about the way odd words are highlighted in blue. The nature of Japanese is that they could be words, so they contain hints, but the reality is that they are not those words in the context.

Yeah, I’ve also pointed this out in the ‘why don’t people LingQ more’ thread. The system either divides the words strangely, or highlights only parts of them because it thinks they are words (which, as dooo pointed out, they could be, just not in that particular context). You basically have to highlight the word you want, then manually add a new hint. I see how this would be extremely confusing to someone who is just starting to learn Japanese.

Not as confusing as it was a year ago before the spacing algorithm and the mouseover functionality was introduced. And, presumably, as more people create their own hints, it will become easier to see the meaning of the texts.

Unfortunately the word-splitting is part of the algorithm, so editing the text wouldn’t really change anything. The algorithm can certainly be improved, but for now it’s more or less functional. We’ll look at ways to improve it in the future.

I agree with Helen, I do not see a big problem in Japanese. We have to realize that there are lots of areas in the different languages where things are not perfect. We are working on them, while at the same time putting out other fires and working on new functions and features. We will get there eventually. Please be patient.

“And, presumably, as more people create their own hints, it will become easier to see the meaning of the texts.”

So if I create a LingQ in a Japanese lesson by selecting text, will that text then show up as blue for other learners who open the same text and who have not previously LingQed that text?

BTW I am not complaining. Just looking to help as I study.

Any word, or combination of characters that has been saved as a word or phrase, and for which there is a translation or hint, will show the previously saved hints or translations.
