Handwritten kanji looks different that typed kanji. These weekend I spent about a half of hour to “decode” 6 or 7 lines of handwritten Japanese text. Initially I was not able to recognise even hiragana %)
I did not recognise 切 in 切手 (but I do know this kanji and word! I just thought that it is 2 different kanji - something like “t” and “n”), 奈 in 美奈子, and 校 in 学校 (it really looks different). If there any online resource where I can see both typed and handwritten forms of kanji? Or perhaps some “secrets” of kanji decoding exist :))) Can you tell me that secrets :)))
I have had the same problem with handwritten Russian 
Being Russian native, I, of course, don’t think that Russian handwriting is so hard to decode as Japanese kanji :))) But I write (have been writing?) and read Russian about 20 years already. But it depends… Yes, it depends… My handwriting is awful
