What’s the difference between sign up and register?

register as a noun can mean an official list of things/information, like names, birth dates or marriages, historic places. register can also refer to a particular part of the voice or an instrument, or even to a specific variety of a language. So “register” relates to ranges or spectrums or lists of things/information. “to register something” would be to put/associate a thing into a list or record of information. So the nature of “to register” is the same as “to sign up” except when we say “to register” it makes us think about what the person is signing up into (it creates a context in the back of our minds which looks like a list of information). For example, If I said that “I need to register at a school” it would make me imagine my application/name getting positioned within a list of other applications/names. “To sign up” doesnt provide this context.

You can think of others words as well like a cash-register which registers customers payments into a chronological list amongst other customers payments.

“It took me a moment to register the truth” (to put the new truth in amongst the list of other truths in my mind)

“I’m having a difficult time registering your words” for example
