Korean content

Hi all,

I think we need to get the Korean library more expanded.

I started with a few ‘Who is She’ lessons but I was disheartened to learn that they were of little use, even after a native Korean recording them. So I will try to find some more natural content.

When is Hyunwoo uploading the beginner lessons on LingQ?

I will try my best to get some more Korean content on here so that the library has more options for learners of Korean.

Anthony.

I think an easy starter course on Hangul would be good. It could be in English with explanations of how Korean writing is one of the most amazing language designs ever!

For example, people who are just browsing may not have any idea how Korean is layered.

I don’t know much Korean, but just knowing that 말 is a word that can be sounded out and is similar in Japanese and Chinese is helpful to me.
ㅁ=m
ㅏ=a
ㄹ=l

It’s all nicely stacked as a word. 馬 ma and (u)ma…horse.

What do others think?

Mait, I think that’s a good idea. Compared to Japanese and Chinese writing systems, Hangeul is actually very easy and straightforward, so I think it could be covered in a lesson or two here. I have a friend who’s on here, and he’s been working on a couple of lessons to put up. I’ll talk to him and see if he’d be able to do a lesson about the alphabet.

Yes! Thank-you! Yeah!

Sorry, I mean “Yay!”

Yeah would be nice to know more about Hyun woo Sun’s contribution. If itll be here in the near future?

I’ve been VERY busy with work the last few weeks soo I havent done much for my korean studying. I’m hoping my wife agrees to write and record more Short writings, If they are of any use to anyone. If not Ill just keep them to myself =p.

Keroro, you wife’s content is popular, see other thread, please keep it coming. Thank you.

I will chase Hyunwoo. I know he has lots of things to do. If he cannot do it, I will find someone else. We want native speakers, good sound, and male and female voices. I will let you where he stands onthis.

In another thread I mentioned that I would be willing to translate lessons, and have the translations checked by my wife. She doesn’t like recording her voice, however. If Hyunwoo isn’t up to doing everything, I can help with some, just point the way. If there is some way we can divide the work up, it will probably go more smoothly than relying on only one person.

Arsenius,

If you could translate the ‘Who is She’ lessons I can get a native Korean (maybe two) to record them.

Anthony,
I started those earlier, but since Hyunwoo was working on them, I stopped. If he isn’t doing them anymore, I will gladly continue.

There are a lot of recorded Korean texts at RhinoSpike.com, which is a free online service offering audio for text. The downside is, the content doesn’t appear to be arranged in any order besides the dates of creation for the recordings. I’ve had a brief look and there appear to be some quite lengthy texts. Who knows, maybe it might make an interesting source of surprise lessons?

One of my lang-8 friends always makes Korean versions of her journal, and has recently started adding recordings.
I’ve started to share the lessons here, she is very enthusiastic about helping foreigners learn Korean.
http://www.lingq.com/learn/ko/store/48818/ (I haven’t gone through them in detail, but the level seems advanced)
I’m sure she could be convinced to write some beginner or intermediate level content if she was say provided with a free basic membership :wink:
(*honestly that’s just me trying to help her out, she’d probably do it for free. But I think considering how scarce the lingq Korean library is and the growing market for Korean study I think doing some quid pro quo with some Koreans isn’t out of the question.)

@Chris,
I have gotten a number of Korean news articles recorded at Rhinospike. Anyone who is interested can check them out. I would upload them here, but they are copyrighted by various news sites…
Check out my Rhinospike profile here

kmanley,
Please ask your friend to email me at steve(at)lingq.com. I am sure we can work something out.

By the way the foregoing was me in disguise.

I just had a communication with Hyunwoo who tells me that he is been traveling but should be able to get at our content this week!! Let’s hope.

Wow… I don’t know many foreigners are interested in learning Korean … : )
Actually I’v served the Army in Korea as a mendatory service for one and half year becuase
every Korea men has to serve the army for almost two years (22months) as a mendatory service.
Anyway I’m working with U.S Army but I never seen the guy who are interested in learning Korean.
So this is really happy to see what you guys try to learn Korean that’s why I’d like to help you guys…
What can I do in this Forum?

Arsenius, that’s good to see! Can you say whether the majority of content there is of much substance, or is it just generally things like pop-lyrics? If there are things like interviews, and more articles like the ones you had recorded, then there may be more Korean content than we think. The only problem is, as you mentioned, these would have to be uploaded privately owing to the whole copyright thing.

Chris, are you asking me about other people’s content on Rhinospike? I can’t really say, as I haven’t spent too much time looking through it.

As for the stuff in my profile, there is stuff about:
North Korea
A cat abuser
A man from China who is cold all the time
Milk from cloned cows in England
Some new Korean actress

That’s all I can recall off the top of my head.
