So I finally decided to give lingq a shot and I knew coming into it there’s a problem with lingqing words. Should I just lingq every single word even the repeat ones with a different ending. By the time I get to 10000 words and half of them will be repeats.
This is the perennial question. Words have different forms, “go”, “going” “went” etc. Some languages have a lot of different forms like Korean and Japanese with their different endings, or Slavic languages with their cases, or Romance languages with different verb endings.
I have studied all of these at LingQ and do not find saving different forms of words to be a disadvantage, rather an advantage.
First of all, it is not the case that half of the saved words in Korean will be repeats as you call them. Since the endings repeat, and since you will gradually get to know the meaning of the words you save, you will stop saving words where you know the root word and the ending but have not seen them together before.
However, when you review your words in alphabetical order, or the equivalent in Korean, you will still see a number of words with the same root but different endings, grouped together. I find this helps me learn. If I had known the meaning, I would not have saved the word, so obviously I needed some reinforcement when I saved the word.
Words are used in different ways, and in different contexts. Seeing these different words in the captured phrases helps me to see how they are used. I can also Tag words with similar endings or functions, but different root words, if I am having trouble learning them, and their usage. This is a way to use LingQ to get a good grasp on grammar or usage.
If I review my words in the vocabulary and find a string of ten words which are essentially forms of the same word, and I now know them, I can tick them and move them all to known at the same time.
I tend not to do that, however, since I find that the repetitive opportunity to see these related words highlighted in yellow in my texts helps me learn to recognize them and eventually to use them.
Thanks for the quick response. I’ll definatly just start lingqing all words. I wasn’t sure if that would inflate my progress or not. Reviewing flashcards will take some time more, that’s for sure, haha.
