Word grouping

The grouping for some words is incorrect, like for にほんご。This means the dictionary feature doesn’t work properly.

Have you found a sentence like 「ここではきものをぬいでください」?

There is a long story about the splitting algorithms at LingQ for the Japanese language.

No, I haven’t seen that.

I meant some words like にほんご are separated into three words like, に ほん ご. That makes the meaning completely different. The syllables should show up grouped as proper words.

I suppose that spacing words was carried out by a commuter program automatically. It is not as smart as a human being.

Thanks, I just read through some of the other discussion on the topic. I am new to LingQ so I was surprised to see the words split up wrong, that’s all.

It’s because the lessons in the library are created by the students for use by other students. The Japanese automatically write without spacing, and it is not reasonable to ask them to write their lessons in an unnatural way. So the spaces are added by computer, which sometimes gets it wrong.

I am not concerned about the spaces themselves. It’s the fact that single words are split up when they are tagged as words by the algorithm. That makes the dictionary/hint/word count features of LingQ inaccurate and much less useful. I realize this has been discussed a lot in the past and has been of concern to others. It seems like if there were a feature that allowed users to correct the computer’s splitting of words, that would help solve the problem.

I just discovered LingQ recently and the reading system with the word tags is great. I haven’t seen anything like that before, and that’s what drew me to this site. At this point though, it seems to work much better for the Western languages. It doesn’t seem unreasonable to me that someone would double check where the word breaks are when the core of the reading system is clicking on the word, viewing a definition, and applying that to a flashcard. Of course that would require a native speaker to read through each lesson and check the words. Perhaps that’s not feasable and that’s fine. I’m not trying to sound entitled to it.

But if it were possible for someone to go through once and fix the errors that it would improve the learning experience quite a bit. Thanks.

I love the idea of the this site overall. It’s the best language learning website I’ve seen.
