Steve's Book - ~会わせてくれと

三日間 、 外洋航行の貨物船に乗り込んでは船長に会わせてくれと頼みヨーロッパへの渡航と交換に働くことを申し出た 。

I’m struggling with a lot of the sentence, to be honest, haha.

I’m confused with 会わせてくれと, as some research gives 会わせて as “allowed to meet.”

Could somebody help break down the sentence for me? I know all the individual words but the grammar is throwing me!

Thank you,

Ben.

船長に会わせてくれと頼む means he requested (頼む) to be allowed to meet the captain.

This sentence goes on to say that he asked to get passage to Europe (ヨーロッパへの渡航) in exchange for working on the boat (〜と交換に働くこと).

Does this help you at all?

Yes, it does!

I have another question, if that’s okay.

Can I treat と交換に何とか何とか as an expression?

For example,
食べ物と交換に飲み物です。
Food in exchange for drink.

Does that work?

Thank you again!

Yes, you can.
食べ物と交換に飲み物 sounds ok to me but it might be best to get the opinion of a native speaker to make sure it’s the most natural way to say it ^^

I think I got it backwards (duh!)

食べ物と交換に飲み物です。
Drink in exchange for food, right? Haha

Thank you for teaching me と交換に, I never would have got that on my own, haha.

The kidnap(p)ers demanded a ransom in exchange for her safe return. 誘拐犯たちは彼女を無事に引き渡すのと引き換えに身代金を要求した.

Aと交換にBを要求する
demand B in exchange for A

More examples:

“I’m struggling with a lot of the sentence, to be honest, haha.”

I’ll be happy when there are even a small number of sentences in japanese where this isn’t the case for me.

Thank you both so much!
