Y me confió aún:

—No supe comprender nada entonces. Me perfumaba y me iluminaba. ¡No debí haber huido jamás!

No comprendía esa calma mansedumbre.

—Sí, sí, te quiero —prosiguió la flor—. No has sabido nada, por mi culpa.

Has decidido partir. Vete.

He hecho un largo viaje y no he dormido…

No he visto bostezar a nadie desde hace años. Los bostezos son una curiosidad para mí. ¡Vamos!, bosteza otra vez. Es una orden.

—Eso me intimida…, no puedo… —dijo el principito, enrojeciendo.

—¡Hum! ¡Hum! —respondió el rey—. Entonces te… te ordeno bostezar o no bos…

¡Voy a partir!

¡No partas, te hago ministro!

—¿Ministro de qué?

—De… ¡de justicia!

—¡Pero no hay a quién juzgar!

—No se sabe —le dijo el rey—. Todavía no he visitado mi reino.

—¡Oh!

—¡Ah! ¡Ah!

—¿Me admiras mucho verdaderamente?

El principito (3) Der kleine Prinz (3) The little prince (3) Le Petit Prince (3) Il Piccolo Principe

Thus she tormented him soon enough with her somewhat gloomy vanity. Un día, por ejemplo, hablando de las cuatro espinas, dijo al principito: Eines Tages, als er zum Beispiel über die vier Dornen sprach, sagte er zu dem kleinen Prinzen: One day, for example, speaking of the four thorns, he said to the little prince:

"The tigers can come with their claws!"

"There are no tigers on my planet," objected the little prince. And besides, tigers don't eat grass.

"I am not a herb," the flower replied softly.

—Perdóname… -Verzeih mir... -Forgive me…

"I'm not afraid of tigers, but I have a horror of drafts." ¿No tendrías un biombo? Hätten Sie nicht auch einen Bildschirm? Wouldn't you have a screen?

"Horror of drafts ... It is not a luck for a plant," observed the little prince. Esta flor es bien complicada…» Diese Blume ist sehr kompliziert...". This flower is very complicated ... »

"At night you will put me under a balloon." Aquí hace mucho frío. Hier ist es sehr kalt. It is very cold here. Hay pocas comodidades. Es gibt nur wenige Annehmlichkeiten. There are few amenities. Allá, de donde vengo… Da drüben, wo ich herkomme... There, where I come from ...

Pero se interrumpió. Aber sie wurde unterbrochen. But he stopped. Había venido bajo forma de semilla. Er war in Form eines Samenkorns gekommen. It had come in the form of a seed. He had not been able to know anything of other worlds. Humiliated at having been surprised in the preparation of such a naive lie, she coughed two or three times to put the little prince at fault.

-Was ist mit dem Bildschirm? "And the screen? ...

"I was going to look for it, but since you were talking to me!

Then the flower forced a cough to still inflict regrets on him.

Thus, the little prince, despite the good will of his love, soon doubted her. He had taken unimportant words seriously and was very unhappy.

"I shouldn't have listened to you," she confided to me one day; never listen to the flowers. You have to look at them and breathe in their aroma. Mine perfumed my planet, but I couldn't enjoy it. The story of the claws, which had annoyed me so much, must have touched me ... A história das garras, que tanto me tinha irritado, deve ter-me deixado muito emocionada...

Y me confió aún: Und er vertraute mir immer noch: And he still confided to me:

—No supe comprender nada entonces. -Ich konnte damals nichts verstehen. "I didn't understand anything then." I should have judged her by her actions and not by her words. Me perfumaba y me iluminaba. Es hat mich parfümiert und erleuchtet. It perfumed me and illuminated me. ¡No debí haber huido jamás! Ich hätte niemals weglaufen dürfen! I should never have run away! I should have guessed his cuteness, behind his poor cunning. The flowers are so contradictory! But I was too young to know how to love her.

IX

I believe that, for his evasion, he took advantage of a migration of wild birds. The morning of departure he put his planet in order. He carefully swept the active volcanoes. Il a soigneusement balayé les volcans actifs. Ele varreu cuidadosamente os vulcões activos.

Poseía dos volcanes en actividad. Es gab zwei aktive Vulkane. It had two active volcanoes. It was very comfortable to warm up breakfast in the morning. Poseía también un volcán extinguido. Außerdem gab es dort einen erloschenen Vulkan. It also had an extinct volcano. But, as the little prince said: "You never know!" Thus, the extinct volcano also swept. If volcanoes are swept well, they burn smoothly and regularly, without eruptions. Volcanic eruptions are like fire in chimneys. Obviously, on our land, we are too small to sweep our volcanoes. Por eso nos causan tantos disgustos. Deshalb verursachen sie uns so viel Unannehmlichkeiten. That is why they cause us so much trouble.

Deshollinó cuidadosamente los volcanes en actividad. Er hat die aktiven Vulkane sorgfältig abgesucht. He carefully swept the active volcanoes.

The little prince also plucked up, with a bit of melancholy, the last shoots of baobabs. Creía que no iba a volver jamás. Ich dachte, ich würde nie wieder zurückkommen. I thought I was never coming back. But all of these daily jobs seemed extremely enjoyable that morning. And when he watered the flower for the last time, and went to put it under the shelter of his balloon, he discovered that he wanted to cry.

"Goodbye," he said to the flower.

Pero la flor no le contestó. Aber die Blume antwortete nicht. But the flower did not answer him.

—Adiós —repitió. -Auf Wiedersehen", wiederholte er. "Goodbye," he repeated.

La flor tosió. Die Blume hustete. The flower coughed. Pero no por el resfriado. Aber nicht wegen einer Erkältung. But not because of the cold. Mas não por causa de uma constipação.

—He sido tonta —le dijo por fin—. "I've been a fool," he finally told her. -Fui tola", disse ela por fim. Te pido perdón. Ich bitte um Verzeihung. I apologize. Te peço perdão. Procura ser feliz. Versuchen Sie, glücklich zu sein. Try to be happy.

He was surprised by the absence of reproaches. He stood there, puzzled, with the globe in his hand. No comprendía esa calma mansedumbre. Ich habe diese ruhige Sanftmut nicht verstanden. He did not understand that calm meekness.

"Yes, yes, I love you," the flower continued. No has sabido nada, por mi culpa. Meinetwegen haben Sie nichts gehört. You haven't heard anything, because of me. No tiene importancia. Das spielt keine Rolle. It's not important. Pero has sido tan tonto como yo. Aber du warst genauso dumm wie ich. But you've been as stupid as me. Procura ser feliz… Deja el globo en paz. Versuche, glücklich zu sein... Lass den Ballon in Ruhe. Try to be happy ... Leave the balloon alone. Ya no lo quiero. Ich will es nicht mehr. I do not love you anymore.

—Pero el viento… -aber der Wind... "But the wind ...

"I'm not cold enough to ... The cool night air will do me good." Soy una flor. Ich bin eine Blume. I am a flower.

—Pero los animales… -Aber die Tiere... "But the animals ...

"It needs two or three caterpillars if I want to meet butterflies." It looks like it is so beautiful! Si no, ¿quién habrá de visitarme? Wenn nicht, wer wird mich dann besuchen? If not, who will visit me? Tú estarás lejos. Sie werden weit weg sein. You will be far away. Was große Tiere angeht, so habe ich keine Angst vor ihnen. As for large animals, I am not afraid of them. Tengo mis garras. Ich habe meine Krallen. I have my claws.

Y mostró ingenuamente sus cuatro espinas. Und er zeigte naiv seine vier Dornen. And he naively showed his four thorns. Después agregó: Dann fügte er hinzu: Then he added:

—No te detengas más, es molesto. -Hör nicht auf, das nervt. —Don't linger anymore, it's annoying. Has decidido partir. Sie haben beschlossen, zu gehen. You have decided to leave. Vete. Go away.

Well, she didn't want him to see her cry. Era una flor tan orgullosa… Es war so eine stolze Blume... It was such a proud flower ...

X Se encontraba en la región de los asteroides 325, 326, 327, 328, 329 y 330. X Er befand sich in der Region der Asteroiden 325, 326, 327, 328, 329 und 330. X It was in the region of asteroids 325, 326, 327, 328, 329 and 330. So he began to visit them to find an occupation and to learn.

El primero estaba habitado por un rey. Die erste wurde von einem König bewohnt. The first was inhabited by a king. The king, dressed in purple and ermine, was seated on a very simple and yet majestic throne.

Here is a subject, ”the king exclaimed when he saw the little prince.

Y el principito se preguntó: And the little prince wondered:

"How can you recognize me if you've never seen me before?"

I did not know that for kings the world is very simplified. Todos los hombres son súbditos. All men are subjects.

"Come closer so I can see you better," said the king, who was proud to finally be someone's king.

The little prince looked around for a place to sit, but the planet was completely covered by the magnificent robe of ermine. So he remained standing, and as he was tired, he yawned.

"It is against protocol to yawn in the presence of a king," the monarch told him. Te lo prohíbo. Ich verbiete es dir. I forbid it.

—No puedo evitarlo —respondió confuso el principito—. "I can't help it," replied the little prince, confused. He hecho un largo viaje y no he dormido… I have made a long journey and I have not slept ...

"Then," said the king, "I order you to yawn." No he visto bostezar a nadie desde hace años. I haven't seen anyone yawn in years. Los bostezos son una curiosidad para mí. Gähnen ist für mich eine Kuriosität. Yawns are a curiosity to me. ¡Vamos!, bosteza otra vez. Komm schon, gähne noch einmal. Come on, yawn again. Es una orden. Es ist ein Befehl. That's an order.

"That intimidates me ... I can't ..." said the little prince, flushing.

—¡Hum! -Hm! "Hmm!" ¡Hum! Brumm! Hum! —respondió el rey—. The king replied. Entonces te… te ordeno bostezar o no bos… So ... I order you to yawn or not bos ...

He spluttered a little and looked irritated.

The king essentially demanded that his authority be respected. Y no toleraba la desobediencia. Und er duldete keinen Ungehorsam. And he did not tolerate disobedience. Era un monarca absoluto. Er war ein absoluter Monarch. He was an absolute monarch. But, being very good, he gave reasonable orders.

"If I order," he habitually said, "if I order a general to become a seabird and if the general does not obey, it will not be the general's fault. Será culpa mía.» It will be my fault.

—¿Puedo sentarme? -Darf ich mich setzen? -Can i sit? —inquirió tímidamente el principito. -fragte der kleine Prinz schüchtern. The little prince asked timidly.

"I order you to sit down," replied the king, who majestically picked up a flap from his ermine cloak.

El principito se sorprendió. Der kleine Prinz war überrascht. The little prince was surprised. El planeta era minúsculo. The planet was tiny. ¿Sobre qué podía reinar el rey? Worüber könnte der König herrschen? Over what could the king reign?

—Sire… "Sire ..." he said, "I beg your pardon for questioning you ...

"I order you to question me," the king hastened to say.

—Sire…, ¿sobre qué reináis? -Majestät, worüber herrschst du? "Sire ... what do you reign over?"

"Above all," replied the king, with great simplicity.

—¿Sobre todo? -Especially?

The king with a discreet gesture pointed to his planet, the other planets and the stars.

"About all that?" —dijo el principito. Said the little prince.

—Sobre todo eso… —respondió el rey. "Above all that ..." replied the king.

Pues no sólo era un monarca absoluto sino un monarca universal. For he was not only an absolute monarch but a universal monarch.

—¿Y las estrellas os obedecen? -Und gehorchen dir die Sterne? "And the stars obey you?"

—Por supuesto —le dijo el rey—. -Natürlich", sagte der König. "Of course," the king told him. Obedecen al instante. Sie gehorchen augenblicklich. They obey instantly. No tolero la indisciplina. I do not tolerate indiscipline.

Un poder tal maravilló al principito. Diese Macht verblüffte den kleinen Prinzen. Such power amazed the little prince. If he had stopped it, he could have seen, not forty-four, but seventy-two, or even a hundred, or even two hundred sunsets in the same day, without ever having to move the chair! And since he felt a little sad at the memory of his little abandoned planet, he dared to request a grace from the king:

—Quisiera ver una puesta de sol… Dame el gusto… Ordena al sol que se ponga… -Ich möchte einen Sonnenuntergang sehen... Verwöhn mich... Befiehl der Sonne, unterzugehen... —I would like to see a sunset… Give me a treat… Order the sun to set…

—If I order a general to fly from flower to flower like a butterfly, or to write a tragedy, or to transform into a seabird, and if the general does not execute the order received, who, he or I, would be at fault? ?

—Vos —dijo firmemente el principito. -Du", sagte der kleine Prinz fest. "You," said the little prince firmly.

—Exacto. -Exact. We must demand of each one what each one can do, "replied the king. Authority rests, first of all, on reason. If you order your people to jump into the sea, they will make a revolution. I have the right to demand obedience because my orders are reasonable.

—¿Y mi puesta de sol? "And my sunset?" Replied the little prince, who never forgot a question once he had asked it.

—Tendrás tu puesta de sol. "You will have your sunset." Lo exigiré. Ich werde es verlangen. I will demand it. But I will wait, with my science as a ruler, until conditions are favorable.

—¿Y esto cuando sucederá? -Und wann wird dies geschehen? "And when will this happen?" —indagó el principito. -sagte der kleine Prinz. Asked the little prince.

—¡Hem! -Hier! "Hem!" ¡Hem! Hem! Replied the king, who first consulted a thick calendar, "hem! Hem! It will be at ... at ... it will be tonight at seven forty o'clock!" And you will see how I am obeyed!

El principito bostezó. The little prince yawned. He regretted the loss of his sunset. And since he was getting a bit bored:

"I have nothing else to do here," he said to the king. ¡Voy a partir! I'm going to leave!

"Do not depart," replied the king, who was very proud to have a subject. ¡No partas, te hago ministro! Don't leave, I'll make you a minister!

—¿Ministro de qué? "Minister of what?"

—De… ¡de justicia! "Of… of justice!"

—¡Pero no hay a quién juzgar! -Aber es gibt niemanden, der darüber urteilt! "But there is no one to judge!"

—No se sabe —le dijo el rey—. -Das ist nicht bekannt", sagte der König. "It is not known," said the king. Todavía no he visitado mi reino. Ich habe mein Königreich noch nicht besucht. I have not yet visited my kingdom. I am very old, I have no place for a carriage and I tire of walking.

—¡Oh! But I've already seen it… said the little prince, who leaned out to take another look at the opposite side of the planet. There is no one there, either ...

"You will judge yourself," the king replied. Es lo más difícil. Dies ist der schwierigste Teil. It is the most difficult. It is much more difficult to judge yourself than others. If you can judge yourself well you are a true sage.

"I," said the little prince, "can judge myself anywhere." No tengo necesidad de vivir aquí. Ich habe kein Bedürfnis, hier zu leben. I have no need to live here.

—¡Hem! ¡Hem! —dijo el rey—. Said the king. I think there is an old rat somewhere on the planet. La oigo por la noche. I hear it at night. Podrás juzgar a la vieja rata. You can judge the old rat. The condemn to death occasionally. Thus his life will depend on your justice. But you will pardon it each time to keep it. No hay más que una. Es gibt nur einen. There's no more than one.

—A mí no me gusta condenar a muerte —respondió el principito—. "I do not like to condemn to death," replied the little prince. Y creo que me voy. Und ich denke, ich werde gehen. And I think I'm going.

—No —dijo el rey. "No," said the king.

But the little prince, having completed his preparations, did not want to afflict the old monarch:

-Wenn Eure Majestät pünktlich gehorchen will, könntet Ihr mir einen vernünftigen Befehl geben. "If Your Majesty wishes to be promptly obeyed, you could give me a reasonable order." You could order me, for example, to leave within a minute. It seems to me that the conditions are favorable ...

When the king made no reply, the little prince hesitated for a moment, and then, with a sigh, started off.

"I am making you an ambassador," the king hastened to shout.

Tenía un aire muy autoritario. Er hatte ein sehr autoritäres Auftreten. He had a very authoritarian air.

Big people are very strange, the little prince told himself during the trip.

XI

The second planet was inhabited by a vain:

—¡Ah! ¡Ah! ¡He aquí la visita de un admirador! Here is a visit from a fan! Exclaimed the vain man from afar as soon as he saw the little prince.

Well, for the vain, other men are admirers.

—Buenos días —dijo el principito—. "Good morning," said the little prince. ¡Qué sombrero tan raro tienes! Was für einen seltsamen Hut Sie haben! What a weird hat you have!

"It's to say hello," he answered vainly. It is to greet when they acclaim me. Desgraciadamente, nunca pasa nadie por aquí. Leider kommt nie jemand vorbei. Unfortunately no one ever passes by here.

—¿Ah, sí? -Oh, ja? —dijo el principito sin comprender. -sagte der kleine Prinz verständnislos. Said the little prince without understanding.

"Clap your hands, one against the other," advised the vain one.

The little prince slapped his hands against each other. The vain man saluted modestly, raising his hat.

"This is more fun than visiting the king," said the little prince to himself. And he slapped his hands again, one against the other. El vanidoso volvió a saludar, levantando el sombrero. The vain man saluted again, raising his hat.

After five minutes of exercise the little prince got tired of the monotony of the game:

-Und was muss man tun, damit der Hut fällt? "And what must be done to make the hat fall?" —preguntó… -I ask…

Pero el vanidoso no le oyó. Aber der eitle Mann hörte ihn nicht. But the vain did not hear him. Los vanidosos no oyen sino las alabanzas. The vain hear nothing but praise. Les vaniteux n'entendent que des louanges. Os vaidosos só ouvem elogios.

—¿Me admiras mucho verdaderamente? -Bewunderst du mich wirklich so sehr? "Do you really admire me very much?" —preguntó al principito. -, fragte er den kleinen Prinzen. He asked the little prince.

—¿Qué significa admirar? "What does it mean to admire?"

"To admire means to acknowledge that I am the most beautiful, best dressed, richest and most intelligent man on the planet."

"But you're the only person on the planet!"

—¡Dame el placer! -Gönnen Sie mir das Vergnügen! "Give me the pleasure!" ¡Admírame de todos modos! Bewundern Sie mich trotzdem! Admire me anyway!

"I admire you," said the little prince, shrugging. But why should you be interested in me admiring you?

Y el principito se fue. Und der kleine Prinz ging. And the little prince left.

Big people are decidedly very strange, he told himself during the trip.

The next planet was inhabited by a drinker. This visit was very brief, but it plunged the little prince into a great melancholy.

—¿Qué haces ahí? -Was machst du da? -What are you doing there? He asked the drinker, who he found installed silently, before a collection of empty bottles and a collection of full bottles.

"I drink," replied the drinker, looking gloomy.

—¿Por qué bebes? "Why do you drink?" —preguntóle el principito. -fragte der kleine Prinz. Asked the little prince.

—Para olvidar —respondió el bebedor. -Um zu vergessen", antwortete der Trinker. "To forget," answered the drinker.

—¿Para olvidar qué? "To forget what?" Asked the little prince, who was already feeling sorry for him.

"To forget that I'm ashamed," the drinker confessed, lowering his head.

—¿Vergüenza de qué? "Ashamed of what?" —indagó el principito, que deseaba socorrerle. Asked the little prince, who wanted to help him.

—¡Vergüenza de beber! "Shame to drink!"
