Request another languages

I’m studying Vietnamese now.
Can you add Vietnamese to the application?
It would be fantastic if you did.

Unfortunately, Vietnamese won’t be added anytime soon, since we don’t have a high quality mini stories available for that language, but we will do our best to have it added as soon as possible.

What happened to promise to add more languages in a matter of days?

I have been waiting for months for Tagalog to be added. I would be okay with the poor quality recording. Better than nothing. I would happily subscribe again once it’s added…

It used to be “we will upload new languages once we upgrade to 5.0”, now it seems like there have been multiple languages you guys “won’t add anytime soon” because the mini-stories aren’t “high quality”. We were told that new languages would be added in a matter of days 2 weeks ago, although we weren’t told which languages, probably because they didn’t actually intend to release any.

Well, there are a lot of mini stories that are already uploaded that are poor quality, such as the Brazilian Portuguese and from what I hear, Spanish and German mini stories, so poor quality doesn’t seem to have delayed things before.

there are apparently also courses without ministories. At least for Malay I don’t find them.

Yes I can see, I think it’s because the Malay option is still in Beta, however they do have the Indonesian mini stories and from what I hear, the two languages are both mutually intelligible forms of Southeast Asian Bahasa.

Zoran, 3 weeks ago you said the following:

@tavisoreilly We do have all 60 stories in Vietnamese, thanks to @tuzogep. :)”

Can you please explain what is happening for the people who are waiting for Vietnamese to be released…

Apparently that the sound quality is not to their standards for those specific mini stories

Does anyone mind that the sound quality may not be 100% perfect? I’m sure it’s more than adequate. I’d still be happy to have access to vietnamese despite this.
Please release it with the current ministories.

Hi, yes, I think that the quality of the Mini Stories should be very good, because that’s the first point of access in a new language for a lot of learners. And the paying users expect the LingQ Mini Stories to be “perfect”, because they are part of the LingQ programm. The independent Mini Stories made by customers are not under that scrutiny.
I myself was quite disappointed when I found errors in a few (beta) Mini Stories, because these wrong sentences confused me a lot.
The audio is not the only thing that can be bad. The translation can be poorly made, too.

Hello, I’m not part of the LingQ team. But after having read the threads regarding new languages I needed to comment on that topic.

Have you ever uploaded e.g. a song text here and had the lyrics and the song aleady available?
I did that a few times. And then I chose the sound for every single sentence. If you want to do that one song right, that process takes approximately an hour.
Now think about doing that with 60 songs. It would take e.g. 60 hours. So someone who works 40 hours a week would need 1.5 weeks just to set the audio right. And they would need to work without getting phone calls, without reading emails , without meetings and without answering any of the many emails about the state of the languages B to Z (!) or sorting through the content of other received Mini Stories.
And now think about doing the same process with song lyrics in a language you don’t know or you can’t even read. That makes everything more difficult. And you’d need someone (who speaks the language) to test your work once. So that person needs to proof read and proof listen every sentence. But that proof reader has their own work schedule - and holidays and sick days, too. So you have to wait according to their time table. And after that you have to make all the changes and let them check again. And all the time you know there are so many other languages in the pipeline.

I really don’t understand all your complaints. A roll out for a new project takes time. Someone actually has to do the work.
And I did not chose this App because of a language they don’t offer yet.

I would prefer LingQ to iron out the remaining difficulties with the upgrade first. With a few already uploaded languages there are still little problems (e.g. letters or symbols special to certain languages that are not recognized).
As a project manager I’d like to first make clear that we caught all the little quirks of a new language and the programm itself (or example the amount of coins a word is worth) before uploading a completely new language. Because a barrage of complains after a launch is quite harder to tackle.

Some of the Mini Stories that have already previously been uploaded are inaudible, so I doubt there’s even anyone checking them after submission.

I’m not complaining because of the time it is taking. I’m complaining because they are not releasing it when they said they would (releasing 2 languages by the end of march) I would be fine if they said in the beginning that no languages is to be released on march, but they didn’t. It’s just very annoying when you are given a release date and then not be released with no follow up information time after time.

We are now in process of going through all already available Mini Stories in all languages and wherever we feel it needs improvement, we will be replacing them with high quality stories.
That’s one of the reasons why we won’t load new languages with poor quality stories. We want to make sure that all existing languages get perfect quality Mini Stories, and all new languages need to be the same. We don’t want to look into replacing them later.

In that case, it would be good to revisit the Korean ones, as the quality varies wildly as do the politeness levels which is very confusing. If possible it would be good to have them translated by one person, and recorded by two or more.

go here and you can help contributing to Vietnamese being added.
