Does anyone know why text to speech doesn’t work for Latin on android? My google text to speech works perfectly with all of the other languages, but it insists on giving me the most robotic TTS voice I’ve ever heard for the Latin. However, if I open Lingq in Chrome on my phone instead of on the app, I can hear the normal Latin pronunciation. Is there any way to add this voice to the app?
I know that Google doesn’t have a Latin TTS voice for download, but anything would be better than that robot.
Exactly as you have noticed, Google TTS app doesn’t have Latin available as option at the moment. LingQ app will use any TTS which is set as default under your phone settings. Unfortunately I am not familiar with any app that has Latin available, but if someone do know any, they will hopefully help you.
Although it likely isn’t a perfect replica, standard Classical pronunciation does exist. Ecclesiastical pronunciation also exists. Just imagine listening to an American robot read French aloud with English pronunciation. Even if you didn’t know what the correct pronunciation was, you would know that you were listening to an abomination.
lol. I’m sure I could know what bad Latin sounds like, even if I don’t know what the right one is.
As someone who would be interesting in learning it someday, I would be curious to know if you have a good place to point me with regard to the Classical and Ecclesiastical variants. I always wondered if people (ie priests) were just doing it like it sounded in English. thanks
