Now that the change has been made, showing pinyin/traditional characters in the text as well, I would like to suggest that it is made possible to also show the pinyin only upon clicking on a word. I occasionally use it to check pinyin of a few characters but having it turned on now means I have to see the pinyin while reading the text above all the words as well. That’s quite distracting. Turning it off means I cannot see the pinyin even after clicking on the word in the hint.
Also, it would be great to be able to turn on traditional characters like now in the text, but in addition to that, upon clicking on a word, show it’s pinyin (showing above the hint both traditional and pinyin in addition to the simplified would be the best solution, or at least an option for me). I like to study traditional characters like this, but then I lose the option to quickly check the pinyin of some of them, as it’s not possible to have both in the hint.
Anyway the most important thing is to separate the option to turn on the pinyin/traditional characters just in the text itself and just above the hint.
I’ve asked the same both on the forum and via email support. In the reply to my email Zoran says that not showing the Pinyin in the pop ups is actually a bug and will be fixed in the coming updates.
the pinyin does show in the popups if I turn it on, it’s just annoying when it’s above the text too. Anyway I guess they will do sth to give us more options as you say
I would really like to see the whole text change to traditional. That’s my focus and I can read them much better than simplified.
But even on maximum text size, a small trad character above the simplified character is way too small to read! Especially with more complicated chars like 歸，舊，these kinds
Yeah, i know, pop up and the script above ate connected to the same option while they shouldn’t. I also find the Pinyin above irritating, i automatically start reading the Pinyin only which defeats the purpose of learning Hanzi.
This 100 times. Even though I can read Chinese very comfortably at this point (arguably more quickly than English if I know all the words), our brain wants to revert to what is easy and familiar, which is roman letters.
Which actually makes it harder to read, but it’s the recognition of the letters that draws us.
Yes, we have added Pinyin for Chinese and Hiragana/Romaji for Japanese in the iOS app in the text in our latest release. We plan to do as we have done on the web which is to show the Pinyin permanently under the term in the popup when you tap on a word and to have the setting only turn Pinyin on or off in the text.
Hi Branicek. An option for you might be to install a Browser plugin that shows you translation and also Pinyin for each word you hover over with your mouse. I study Japanese on Lingq and use a Safari plugin called Sararikai. With just one click on the taskbar it can be enabled or disabled. The plugin comes in most handy when I visit native Japanese homepages and read something. However it works on Lingq, too.
@morrisj95: The popup shows the characters in a larger font. So might be useful for you as well.
I am sure those plugins exist for Chinese as well. Just google it.
