One of the most powerful stories he told to clarify the usefulness of philosophy was 'De grotmythe'. Het is misschien de beroemdste allegorie in de filosofie. It is perhaps the most famous allegory in philosophy.

Op het begin is het overweldigend. At the beginning it is overwhelming. No começo, é impressionante.

As Plato puts it soberly: Out of compassion, the enlightened man decides to return from the sunlight to the dark cave to help his friends who are still living in illusion.

If he is not interested in them and wants to explain what the sun is or what a tree looks like, the prisoners become sarcastic, angry, and eventually want to kill him.

De grotmythe is een verhaal over het leven van alle verlichte mensen. The cave myth is a story about the life of all enlightened people.

De gevangenen zijn mensen voor filosofie, de zon is het licht van de rede, de vervreemding van de teruggekeerde filosoof is wat allen die waarheid brengen kunnen verwachten als ze hun kennis naar de mensen brengen die niet van nadenken houden. The prisoners are people for philosophy, the sun is the light of reason, the alienation of the returned philosopher is what all those who bring truth can expect when they bring their knowledge to the people who do not think about it.

Veel van de dingen waar we enthousiast over zijn zoals roem, de perfecte partner, een goed betaalde baan zijn oneindig minder reëel dan we denken. Many of the things we are enthusiastic about, such as fame, the perfect partner, a well-paid job are infinitely less real than we think.

Ze zijn voor het grootste deel schaduwen, door onze cultuur geprojecteerd op de muren van onze fragiele geest. They are for the most part shadows, projected by our culture on the walls of our fragile mind.

We starten allemaal in een moeilijke plaats. We all start in a difficult place.

Plato wist uit ervaring precies wat de mensen in de grot doen met mensen die claimen het licht te hebben gezien. Plato knew from experience exactly what the people in the cave do with people who claim to have seen the light.

We begonnen allemaal in die grot, maar het is Plato’s grootste inzicht dat we daar niet hoeven te blijven, en de weg naar buiten is, simpelweg, filosofie. We all started in that cave, but it is Plato's greatest insight that we do not have to stay there, and the way out is, simply, philosophy.

Dat is de zon wiens licht we kunnen volgens en door wiens stralen de echte natuur der dingen helder worden. That is the sun whose light we can, according to and through whose rays the real nature of things becomes clear.
