Coordinate

coordinate – one of a set of numbers which give the exact position of a point on a map, computer screen etc

That’s the definition I looked up as a noun in a dictionary. I don’t understand “one of a set of numbers” means singular or plural, I thought it was singular, but there’s no "s’ after the verb “give”, I guess “one of a set of numbers” is plural. How come? One of my friends is singular, right?

It’s in Plural because it is connected with “numbers which give…”, not with a set though the word ‘set’ is not one thing but a collection of things or a group of people. That’s why ‘a set of numbers’= several numbers, a lot of numbers.

Every point on a Cartesian plain can be described, can be located, in terms of an “x” coordinate and a “y” coordinate. That is to say, each point is defined {x,y}. You are correct, “coordinate” is singular. To describe, to specify, the location of a point in a Cartesian coordinate system, a point will have an “x” coordinate and a “y” coordinate. So, you see, each point has two coordinates, an x-coordinate and a y-coordinate.

x is a real number
y is a real number

Here is an example of set of coordinates {0, 2}. One coordinate is zero. Another coordinate is two.

In a 3-D field, each point has three coordinates–an x coordinate, a y coordinate and a z coordinate.

I do not understand your question about one of your friends. Are you asking if “one of my friends” is equivalent to a third person singular subject? If so, then, yes, “one of my friends” is third person singular.
For example: One of my friends likes basketball. One of my friends lives across the street.
