While in sentence mode I have found no way to determine a different tempo to listening to the target language. While doing shadowing some of the text is simple too fast for me to follow along. Will there be a way to influence tempo in sentence mode? Could it be sooner rather than later?

Yes, at the moment audio speed can’t be controlled in the sentence mode. At the moment we don’t have in plans to make changes there, at least not in the near future.
That is very unfortunate and diminishes the usefulness of sentence mode for me.
