Can fietsen be a bike and cycling? If it is, do you have to just guess what they are saying using the context from the rest of the sentence?

een fiets = a bicycle; fietsen (plural noun) = bicycles

Ik heb serieus een fiets van €250 gekocht en een uur later zag ik mijn gestolen fiets staan en heb die terug gejat, dus nu heb ik twee fietsen.

Seriously, I bought a 250 euro bicycle and an hour later I saw my stolen bicycle standing there and stole it back, so now I have two bicycles.

    ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

fietsen (verb, infinitive) = to ride a bicycle

    leren = to learn

leren fietsen = to learn how to ride a bicycle

Ik heb leren fietsen means Ik heb fietsen geleerd (except the Dutch don't ever say it this way).

I learned how to ride a bicycle.

This is called the Modal Perfect. (I wouldn't place Modal Perfect under "beginners" Dutch, by the way.)

The Modal Perfect (or what I call 'double infinitive') is when there are two infinitive forms of the verb that operate in conjunction with each other, like 'leren fietsen,' and instead of using the past participle, the infinitive form of both verbs is used:

Ik heb leren fietsen. = I learned how to ride a bicycle.

Meanwhile, 'leren' also means 'to teach.'

'Ik heb haar fietsen geleerd' actually means "I taught her how to ride the bicycle."

Another common Modal Perfect verb combination used in this lesson is:

leren kennen = to get to know (someone)

Ik heb al veel mensen leren kennen = I have already gotten to know a lot of people.

één fiets, twee fietsen (fietsen = plural of "fiets")

"fietsen" = to ride a bike (infinitive)

Dank je wel, Fasulye. Ik hoop dat mijn uitleg nu duidelijker is.

        Hoi brucenator,

Jouw uitleg over "fietsen" is nu kompleter en duidelijker. Goed dat je dat nog verbeterd hebt. Ja, fietsen is de grondvorm van een werkwoord of de meervoudsvorm van een naamwoord.
