今 から 千 年 以上 も むかし 、 京 の 都 に は 酒 呑童 子 ( しゅ てん どうじ ) と いう 、 恐ろしい 鬼 の 親分 が いました 。

酒 呑童 子 は 大江 山 ( おおえ やま ) を 隠れ家 に して 、 都 へ 現れて は 仲間 たち と 悪い 事 を 重ねた 鬼 でした が 、 源 頼光 ( みなもと の より みつ ) の 家来 の 渡辺 綱 ( わた なべ の つな )、 卜部 季 武 ( うら べ の すえ たけ )、 碓井 貞光 ( うすい さ だ みつ )、 坂田 金 時 ( さ かた の き ん とき ) の 四人 が 山伏 ( やまぶし ) に 姿 を 変えて 、 酒 呑童 子 を 見事に せいばつ した の です 。

酒 呑童子 を せいばつ して 都 に 平和 を 取り戻した 四人 は 、ある 夜 に 集まって お酒 を 飲んで いました 。

最初 は たわ い もない 世間話 を して いました が 、 やがて 四人 の 話 は 羅 生 門 ( ら しょうもん ) と いう ところ に 夜な夜な 現れる 化け物 の 話 に なり 、 リーダー 格 の 貞光 ( さ だ みつ ) が みんな に 尋ねました 。

「 羅 生 門 に 住む 化け物 は 鬼 だ と 言われて おる が 、 おのおの 方 は どう 思わ れる ？ 」

「鬼 か 、それ は あり うる 事 じゃ 」

「 うむ 。 おる かも しれ ん のう 」

季 武 ( すえた け ) と 金 時 ( きん とき ) が 言う と 、 一 番 年 の 若い 渡辺 綱 ( わた なべ の つな ) が 、 むき に なって 反対 しました 。

「鬼 と は 、信じられません 。 鬼 は 大江山 で 、我々 が 全部 退治 した では ありません か 」

「確かに な 。 しかし 、取り残し が あった かも しれん ぞ 」

「 いいえ 。 鬼 ども は 、確かに 全部 退治 した はず 」

し ー ん と 静まり返り 、 何 か が ひそんで いる 様 な 気配 は ありません 。

「ふん 、鬼 どころ か 、人 一 人 おらん じゃないか 」

綱 は 鼻先 で 笑う と 、約束 の 高 札 を 羅生門 の 門前 に 打ち立てました 。

《 渡辺 綱 。 約束 に より て 羅 生 門 、 門前 に 参上 す 》

そして 綱 が 帰ろう と した 時 、暗い 柱 の かげ から 一人 の 若い 娘 が 現れました 。

(いつ の 間に ？ それにしても 、こんな 夜ふけ に 娘 が 一人 で どこ へ 行く のだろう ？ )

不思議 に 思った 綱 が 声 を 掛ける と 、娘 が 答えました 。

「わたし は これ から 、五 条 の 父 の ところ へ 戻ら ねば なり ませ ぬ 。 でも 、雨 が 降って 道 が ぬかるみ 、困って いた ので ございます 」

「ほう 、五 条 なら わたし の 帰る 方 と 同じ じゃ 。 それ なら 、 一緒に 馬 に 乗って いか れる が よい 」

そう 言って 綱 が 娘 に 手 を 差し伸べた 時 、娘の 姿 が 鬼 に 変わった か と 思う と 、ものすごい 力 で 綱の 首 を しめつけて きました 。

「 ぐっ！ 」

綱 が 刀 に 手 を 掛ける と 、鬼 は 首 から 手 を 離して 空中 高く 舞い上がります 。

「 おのれ ！ き さま が 羅生門 の 鬼 であった か 」

「 アハハハハハッ 、 今さら 分かって も 、 もう 遅い わ ！ 」

空中 の 鬼 が 再び 綱 に 襲い掛かりました が 、綱 は その 攻撃 を かわす と 、鬼 の 一瞬 の すき を ついて 鬼 の 腕 を 切り落としました 。

「 ウギャァァァァッ ！ 」

腕 を 切り落とされた 鬼 は 空中 へ 逃げる と 、綱 を にらみつけて 言いました 。

「綱 よ 、その 腕 を 七 日間 だけ 、きさま に あずける ！ 腕 は 必ず 、取り戻し に 行く から な ！ 」

そして 鬼 は 、空 高く 舞い上がって 消えました 。

「やはり 鬼 が いた の か 」

綱 は 切り落とした 鬼 の 腕 を 拾う と 、戻って 仲間 たち に 見せました 。

その 鬼 の 腕 は 、はがね の 様 に 固く 太い 腕 で 、針 を 突き刺した 様 な 毛 が 一面 に 生えて います 。

「一 人 で 鬼 の 腕 を 切り落とす とは 、大した もの だ 」

「全く だ 。 だが 七 日 の 間 に 鬼 が 腕 を 取り戻し に 来る のだろう 。 大丈夫 か ？ 」

心配 する 仲間 の 言葉 に 、綱 は 胸 を 張って 言いました 。

「 大丈夫 。 鬼 が 腕 を 取り に 来たら 、返り 討ち に して くれる わ 」

その 日 から 綱 は 、鬼 の 腕 を 頑丈な 木箱 に 入れる と 家 の 警護 を げんじゅうに しました 。

綱 は 鬼 の 腕 から ひと時 も 離れ ず 、昼 も 夜 も 見守りました 。

そうして 何事 も なく 、七 日 目 を むかえました 。

その 夜 は 月 の 美しい 夜 で 、 一人 の 老婆 （ ろうば ） が 綱 の 家 を おとずれました 。

老婆 が 言う に は 自分 は 綱 の おば に あたる者 で 、 はるばる 難波 ( なん ば → 大阪 ) から 綱 を 訪ねて 来た と 言います 。

綱 は 家来 に 命じて 老婆 を 追い返そう と しました が 、老婆 は 必死に なって 言います 。

「綱 に 会いたい 一心 で 、わざわざ 難波 から 来た のじゃ 、もう 年 で 体 も 弱り 、今夜 が 会える 最後 かも 知れぬ 身 。 どうか ばば の 願い を 聞き届けて くだされ 」

そこ で 仕方なく 、綱 は 老婆 を 屋敷 に 入れました 。

老婆 は 綱 の 顔 を 見る と 、涙 を 流して 喜びました 。

綱 が 老婆 に 鬼 の 腕 を 差し出した その 時 、老婆 の やさし そうな 顔 が 恐ろしい 羅生門 の 鬼 の 顔 に なりました 。

「 ギャハハハハハッ 。 綱 よ 、七 日 目 の 夜 、この 腕 を しかと もらった ぞっ ！ 」
