Hi! I can’t find this verb anywhere else and translations here at LingQ differ a lot. I’m not sure what it means. Also, is there a kanji for it? TY!,
Yes, the translations are very strange and I can’t find any verb that fits those. I think it’s a simple mistake and this is just the most simple possibility: a from from “iu” (言う) say:. The sentence would be translated as:
“At home we never say what we want but we generally get it.”
You are right that this is the negative form of 言う but your translation is not quite correct.
This literal translation of 家では 、 ほしいものが いつもとはいいませんが 、 だいたい 手に入ります would be:
“I usually get what I want at home, though I won’t say I always do”. It’s a pretty common way to phrase things in Japanese.
The translation that they have up now is fine. No mistake imo.
Thank you very much for the correction. I didn’t know that expression and that certainly threw me off.
The translations I was referring to were the sentence translation and the one you get for the word, those are clearly wrong. I hadn’t realized that there was a manual translation of the whole text.
