ツル の 恩返し

むかし むかし 、貧しい けれど 、心 の 優しい おじいさん と おばあさん が いました 。

ある 寒い 冬 の 日 、おじいさん は 町 へ たきぎ を 売り に 出かけました 。

すると 途中 の 田んぼ の 中 で 、一羽 の ツル が ワナ に かかって もがいて いた のです 。

「おお 、おお 、可愛 そうに 」

おじいさん は 可愛そう に 思って 、ツル を 逃がして やりました 。

すると ツル は 、 お じいさん の 頭 の 上 を 三 ベ ん 回って 、

「 カウ 、 カウ 、 カウ 」

と 、さも うれし そうに 鳴いて 、飛んで 行きました 。

その 夜 、日暮れ 頃 から 降り始めた 雪 が 、コンコン と 積もって 大雪 に なりました 。

おじいさん が おばあさん に ツル を 助けた 話 を している と 、表 の 戸 を 、

トントン 、 トントン

と 、叩く 音 が します 。

「ごめん ください 。 開けて ください まし 」

若い 女 の 人 の 声 です 。

おばあさん が 戸 を 開ける と 、頭 から 雪 を かぶった 娘 が 立って いました 。

おばあさん は 驚いて 、

おじいさん が 町 へ 売り に 行く と 、それ を 殿さま が 高い 値段 で 買って くれました 。

おじいさん は 喜んで 、糸 を 買って 帰りました 。

すると 娘 は また 、機 を おり 始めました 。

おどろいた おばあさん は 、おじいさん に この 事 を 話しました 。

機 の 音 が 止んで 、前 より も やせ細った 娘 が 布 を かかえて 出て きました 。

「おじいさま 、おばあさま 。 もう 、隠して いて も 仕方 ありません ね 。

ご恩 を お返し したい と 思って 娘 に なって まいりました 。

けれど 、もう お 別れ で ございます 。

そう 言った か と 思う と 、おじいさん と おばあさん が 止める の も 聞かず 、たちまち 一羽 の ツル に なって 空 へ 舞い上がりました 。

そして 家 の 上 を 、三 ベん 回って 、

「 カウ 、 カウ 、 カウ 」

と 、鳴き ながら 、山 の 向こう へ 飛んで 行って しまいました 。

「ツル や 。 いや 、娘 や 。 どうか お前 も 、たっしゃ で いて おくれ 。 ・・・今 まで 、ありがとう 」

おじいさん と おばあさん は 、いつまでも いつまでも ツル を 見送りました 。
