La mattinata del 6 febbraio era cominciata con una bella giornata di sole, ed ero di buon umore.
The morning of February 6 began with a beautiful sunny day, and I was in a good mood.

After working on my book and taking a run in the park, I was ready to face the 3 hours of lesson that awaited me.

Era un invito formale ad andare a Mosca per prendere parte ad una conferenza sulle lingue, organizzata per la prima volta in questo paese.
Es war eine förmliche Einladung, nach Moskau zu reisen, um an einer Konferenz über Sprachen teilzunehmen, die zum ersten Mal in diesem Land organisiert wurde.
It was a formal invitation to go to Moscow to take part in a conference on languages, organized for the first time in this country.

Ero eccitato e un po' preoccupato, visto che l’accurata preparazione dei due discorsi che avrei tenuto il giorno della conferenza (31 marzo) e del masterclass il giorno successivo (della durata di ben quattro ore) si aggiungevano alla stesura del mio libro, alle lezioni su Skype, e ad una miriade di altri impegni che mi tenevano la testa costantemente occupata.
Ich war aufgeregt und ein wenig besorgt, als sich die sorgfältige Vorbereitung der beiden Vorträge, die ich am Tag der Konferenz (31. März) und der Meisterklasse am folgenden Tag (volle vier Stunden lang) halten sollte, zum Schreiben meines Buches summierte , Skype-Kurse und unzählige andere Verpflichtungen, die meinen Kopf ständig beschäftigten.
I was excited and a little worried, given that the careful preparation of the two speeches that I would have given on the day of the conference (March 31st) and of the masterclass the next day (lasting a full four hours) were added to the writing of my book, to the lessons on Skype, and to a myriad of other commitments that kept my head constantly busy.

I tried - as I always do - to imagine the people, the streets, the buildings, the sky - putting them in relation with what I had read and seen about this country.
Ma la realtà è sempre diversa da come ce la immaginiamo.

But reality is always different from how we imagine it.

Arrivato all’aeroporto di Mosca, e superato il controllo passaporti con una certa disinvoltura, trovo ad aspettarmi Dina, che mi accoglie con un sorriso raggiante e mi abbraccia calorosamente.
Arriving at the Moscow airport, and having passed the passport control with a certain ease, I find Dina waiting for me, who welcomes me with a beaming smile and hugs me warmly.

We head straight for the train that would take us to one of the Moscow stations.

The thing that struck me immediately is the steep and very long escalator that would take us into the bowels of Moscow and the enormous number of people who were heading hastily in every direction.
Mi sentivo un po' a disagio con il mio enorme borsone, un ostacolo quasi ingombrante per i frettolosi moscoviti.

Nonostante il fatto che la metro di Mosca funzioni con un’efficienza invidiabile (soprattutto se confrontata con la nostra metro di Roma), ogni vagone ed ogni corsa è affollata, siamo stipati all’inverosimile, ma dopo due stazioni riusciamo a guadagnarci un angolino in cui continuare la nostra conversazione.
Despite the fact that the Moscow metro works with an enviable efficiency (especially when compared to our Rome metro), every car and every ride is crowded, we are crammed to capacity, but after two stations we manage to earn a corner in to continue our conversation.

Leaving the metro, I feel Russian cold for the first time.

A dry cold, with clear skies and snow everywhere.
Raccolgo due grossi pezzi di neve e mi faccio fotografare così, con il tramonto, il vento gelido che mi sferza la faccia ed un sorriso da bambino che mi illumina il viso.
I pick up two large pieces of snow and have myself photographed like this, with the sunset, the icy wind that whips my face and a child's smile that illuminates my face.
