I currently use Lingq with firefox. I have an addon that converts simplified to traditional. There pretty much hasn’t been any problems using it with lingq and the conversions have all been fine.
The problem is I cannot use this with the mobile app. I understand there are might be some technical issues at first, but I think it could easily qualify as a beta language. The content is already there.
You’re suggesting we convert our Chinese content into traditional? If you prepare a bunch of our content in traditonal I can try to persuade Mark to add it. I do agree it is best to keep it separate. What do others think? How big is the demand?
Steve, i think a lot of people would like to see traditional (Unsupported). Well I would anyways. I’ve been kinda holding out until traditional is added.

I feel like that traditional characters would be a huge asset for most learners of Chinese. Everytime I find a book or magazine at a local library, all the characters are traditional and rarely any simplified. I feel that having traditional characters would grant people more opportunities to read a wide variety of topics.
It’s something we have talked about doing for a long time but we haven’t because we don’t want to split the Chinese learners. By splitting, all translations created would only be available in either one or the other language. By only having one slot, all translations are available to all. We have been trying to figure out a way for users to pick their character preference while keeping the translations the same on the back end but this is proving to be quite a tricky issue.
It may be that the best solution is to create a new slot for Traditional since the other option may never happen.
My focus is on traditional, and I’d love to see it even partially supported by LingQ. I agree with the others that it would be a great asset. As I recall, the original issue was with the algorithm used to split words?
Recently I uploaded the little prince in Chinese. Interesting, I inserted the files as traditional text which was originally automatically converted to simplified but is now actually letting me study it in traditional. However like Chris just mentioned the words are not split correctly and I’m not able to lingq. I assumed that you guys are in the midst of experimenting with some things eh
Are you saying you imported a traditional text and it is now being displayed in Traditional? Or, that you are using the Traditional superscript? We aren’t testing anything I’m afraid.
No I have no idea what superscript even is actually. It just started displaying in traditional about two days ago where it hadn’t usually done so. Now the page is full of a bunch of “unknown” words with question marks above them as it apparently can’t be recognized and therefore assigned pinyin. I’ll email you a screenshot if you’d like Mark
I tried importing a traditional character text last night and it converts automatically to simplified when the lesson is opened. This makes perfect sense given the past issues with the splitting algorithm, however I’m not aware of a way to actually get it to display traditional at all, unless I use a browser plugin, and those don’t work reliably for me.
The superscript is the option within the reader settings to display traditional character equivalents in-line in the text:
@zaxhariahjrl - We did make some changes for Chinese which were meant to eliminate the problem causing some words not to be LingQ-able. It looks like, as a result of this, previously uploaded Traditional lessons are displaying in Traditional now. You should edit those lessons and then hit save & open again to refresh them. Then, you will stop seeing the traditional characters I think. We don’t have any old lessons like this to test on but it would be great if you can test and let us know. We can then try and figure out a better way of dealing with this problem.
Or, if you can find this happening in any library lessons, it would be great to know their url’s.
New to lingo, love it so far, but traditional characters would send me head over heels (not just the little ones that appear above the simple and hurt my eyes)
Hi @mark, since OP didn’t reply, I tested this a few days ago and noticed it still converts to simplified, even if I try to edit the lesson, the actual text has been converted. Not sure if I did something incorrectly, as I imported a new text in traditional. I can keep testing this if needed.
A lot of my content I’ve imported has been automatically converted to simplified. I can’t read it in the original traditional without the use of an addon (or reading it on the original site)
@mark Hey Mark I remember that after having the problem I re-edited the lesson that was displaying in tradition and then it started converting back to simplified again. I guess it’s too late to share a link on that. All is as normal tho!
Yes, I’m afraid that is how it is supposed to function. In future, we are looking to add another slot for Traditional Chinese where you will be able to upload and study Traditional texts.
We added Traditional Chinese yesterday. There is no content in it yet but feel free to start importing. Enjoy! We plan on adding the Cantonese mini stories when available.
