Hi,

This is when it is important to learn phrases rather than individual words. The adverbial phrase ‘all of a sudden’ means that something unexpected happened quite quickly. The words all of a are almost always followed by sudden.

You may also notice the adjective in phrases like sudden change or sudden death, again it has the same meaning -an unexpected, quick change or death. The adverb is suddenly and is used much more frequently. She suddenly realized…She suddenly felt quite sick …He died suddenly
