Hi:) Since we can’t import kindle books… does anyone know a good website to buy pdf books (french) I’ve only found places that want me to buy a subscription and idk if the websites are safe:/

it only has French content, and it has a bunch. I have downloaded and imported Harry Potter and lord of the rings. You do need a sign up, but I used an old unused email address

I don’t mind paying. I just can’t find a version to buy in pdf form for books . Other than kindle which doesn’t work with linq:/
do you mind telling me what app you used to actually open the file? for example my download says epud.pdf.torrent and I can’t figure it out how to open it. (on a new mac)

Epubor has a program (Ultimate) that I use to remove encryption from Kindle books, allowing me to import them into LingQ. It works.

to use a torrent I downloaded an application called “bittorrent” it will allow you to open the torrent file and download the actual pdf,epub etc.

I second this. Epubor works a lot more reliably than Calibre.

I must have converted more than 100 e-books from various e-book formats to PDF using Calibre, but I have never had any problems so far.
What were your issues with Calibre?

Most kindle books you purchase nowadays are encrypted and cannot be converted in native format into text files or e-pubs directly. Not sure about different softwares but I have to use a special older version 1.17.1 of kindle for PC to download the kindle files before converting in Calibre. This old version does not download the DRM with the file as the newer versions do whcih prevents calibre from converting! Also, I use it on Firefox so I’m not sure about other browsers. I have a huge French Kindle library that I have paid for dearly, and I don’t support the idea that when I “buy” a kindle book that I should be limited to only reading it on my kindle. But I suppose it might be in their terms and conditions, so I only recommend this conversion “method” using my super secret pseudonym and not my real name LOL!

The problem is you don’t buy an “e-book” from Amazon per se.
You just pay for a “license” to display the content on an Amazon (supported) device / app.
Here is some legalese on this subject from the Amazon website : Kindle Store Terms of Use - Amazon Customer Service)

smashwords.com sells e-books without copyright protection in several languages, including French.

Supported formats are: EPUB, PDF, DOCX, TXT, MOBI, SRT, ASS, VTT, TTML
Kindle is MOBI. There are no problems with the import. I import them all the time.
Smashwords.com has a lot of books. It takes some tweaking with search, but you can find PDF/EPUB books in other languages to import into Lingq, sometimes free and sometimes paid - but usually affordable.
