57. Arte e matematica

Conosci i numeri romani?

Buona settimana e grazie dell'ascolto.

Iniziamo con un'immagine. Let's start with an image. Close your eyes, not if you're driving, of course. Close your eyes and imagine: a man with open arms, in a circle. The body that for many years and still today is considered perfect. It is a design from the 1500s and today it is also on the Italian 1 euro coin.

What comes to your mind? I'm talking about Leonardo da Vinci's Vitruvian man. Leonardo da Vinci'nin Vitruvius adamından bahsediyorum. Sono sicura che conosci questo disegno. I'm sure you know this drawing. In the design, a man's body is placed in a square and a circle to create perfect harmony. The circle and the square represent perfection and are on top of each other. The center of the circle is also the man's navel. In this way, we have the proportions that Leonardo considered perfect and man is at the center of the world. The circle represents the sky and the square the earth, geometric figures considered harmonic even before Leonardo. Man is the measure of all things, he is in equilibrium in his position at the center of the world. İnsan her şeyin ölçüsüdür, dünyanın merkezindeki konumunda dengelidir.

Un'immagine stupenda eh? Ein schönes Bild, nicht wahr? Gorgeous picture huh? Une belle image, hein ? Güzel bir görüntü, değil mi? E anche molto forte e simbolica. And also very strong and symbolic. Perhaps for this very reason this image has been so successful over the years. In the following centuries, then, it was also considered a symbolic image of Humanism: that historical period where classic authors are rediscovered and man is placed at the center of the world. The period marking the end of the Middle Ages. Période marquant la fin du Moyen Âge. Orta Çağ'ın sonunu işaret eden dönem. Ma questa è un'altra storia. But that's another story. Ama bu başka bir hikaye.

Torniamo un attimo a quest'uomo nudo e perfetto in mezzo a un cerchio. Let's go back for a moment to this perfect naked man in the middle of a circle. I was saying, this image has been so successful that we have it in our hands every day, on the 1 Euro coins circulating in Italy.

Leonardo da Vinci knew the body and its proportions well. He had drawn the body and its parts many times and studied it thoroughly. Vücudu ve parçalarını birçok kez çizmiş ve iyice incelemişti. In questa immagine, Leonardo unisce arte, letteratura e matematica. In this picture, Leonardo combines art, literature and mathematics. Use the proportion, study the numbers and calculate the perfect measurements of a human body. To do this he uses the studies that had been done by artists and philosophers before him, inspired by the Greek model of proportion.

Today I want to talk about this, proportion, numbers and art. The ancient Greeks already knew what we now call the Golden Section or Divine Proportion. What is this? Qu'est-ce que c'est ? Bu da ne? È un numero o meglio una proporzione. It is a number or rather a proportion.

It's not easy to explain this number with words, but let's try to use pictures. If we want to give a practical example, we can take the human arm, our arm. Pratik bir örnek vermek istersek, insan kolunu, kolumuzu ele alabiliriz. We measure our arm from the shoulder to the tip of the middle finger, the longest finger. Then we measure the length from the elbow to the wrist, where our hand begins. If we divide the total length of the arm by that of the forearm (i.e. from the elbow to the hand) we should obtain a number similar or close to 1.6.

This is the golden number, this is the divine proportion. I'm getting around a bit and it's not easy to explain all this in words, so I invite you to look for a drawing on the internet, to better understand. However, from this number it is possible to construct a rectangle, considered a golden, proportionate and harmonious rectangle. From a repeated golden rectangle it is then possible to construct a spiral. The spiral is the shape of a galaxy for example or a snail. It is possible to find spirals that are similar to golden spirals in nature in different situations.

This number was already known in Greek times and there are works that are built following this model.

The best known example is the Parthenon in Athens. Bunun en iyi bilinen örneği Atina'daki Parthenon'dur. Its facade, i.e. the front part of the building, fits perfectly into a golden rectangle. Even in Leonardo's Mona Lisa we can see these geometric shapes based on this number. And also in the Vitruvian man we talked about at the beginning we can find a golden rectangle.

This special number, this proportion, is a very long number starting with 1.6189 and so on. Today, we simply call it Phi (Φ). We know that the Greeks already knew and used this number in architecture and art. In particular, many Greek statues were built with precise proportions between their height and the position of the navel. The navel, that thing in our belly, which connected us to our mother when we weren't born yet, was considered the center of the body.

But let's go in order. Mais procédons dans l'ordre. Ama sırayla gidelim. Chi è quest'uomo? Who is this man? Leonardo Fibonacci, also known as Leonardo Pisano, is one of the most important mathematicians of the Middle Ages. We don't know exactly the details of his life, but we do know that his father was a merchant of the Republic of Pisa and worked in Algeria. This is fundamental because Fibonacci comes into contact with Arabic mathematics, with Indian mathematics (reworked by the Arabs) and with the Greek knowledge of Euclid.

When Fibonacci was born, Roman numerals were still used in Italy. Fibonacci doğduğunda İtalya'da hâlâ Roma rakamları kullanılıyordu. Conosci i numeri romani? Do you know the Roman numerals? Roma rakamlarını biliyor musunuz? Li hai mai visti? Have you ever seen them? Well, let's say they are not very comfortable for doing calculations. You know those letters you see in Italy on an ancient monument? They are usually long sequences of large letters, such as MMXX. Most likely that is the date of construction of the monument, written in Roman numerals.

When Fibonacci was born, trade was very active in the Mediterranean, the Maritime Republics were strong. For trade it was necessary to make calculations. There was no Euro, there was no Dollar, everyone had their own currency. Euro yoktu, Dolar yoktu, herkesin kendi para birimi vardı. Era importante fare operazioni velocemente e in modo efficace. It was important to trade quickly and effectively. Roman numerals were not very convenient for this. The numbers used by the Arabs, who came from India, were more effective. Fibonacci quickly understands that these numbers are more convenient for complex operations.

Thus, in 1202 he published a book that was destined to change the history of the West. Böylece, 1202 yılında Batı tarihini değiştirecek bir kitap yayınladı. Il libro si chiama Liber Abbaci. The book is called Liber Abbaci. In this book he doesn't discover a new thing, but creates a structure and collects the mathematical knowledge he had come into contact with. Here he talks about Hindu-Arabic numbers and talks about their advantages. There are therefore many mathematical problems in the book that Fibonacci solves with Hindu-Arabic numbers. If today we use these numbers, these ten digits and these symbols it is thanks to Leonardo Fibonacci who showed this system of calculation to the West.

Inside the book of Fibonacci there is also a particular problem which then becomes famous in the future. In the problem, which Fibonacci does not invent, but takes from sources prior to him, an annual reproduction system of a pair of rabbits is hypothesized. Fibonacci solves the problem and writes that famous sequence that we still know today and that I told you earlier.

But why do we know this sequence of numbers still today? Later mathematicians, starting with Luca Pacioli, perceive that these numbers are present in nature and that they have a link with the divine proportion. Mathematicians have noticed that if we divide the numbers in this long list, the largest number by the smallest number in succession we get values similar to the Phi number. This ratio of consecutive numbers always becomes a more precise approximation. And these numbers are very present in nature, in the petals of a flower, for example.

But today I don't want to fill your head with numbers, otherwise your brain will melt! With today's episode I mean that mathematics, geometry, literature and art come together, in books, but above all in nature. Looking at the things of the world we can see harmony, beauty. We can be surprised by the repetition of geometric shapes, the shape of a flower or a tree.
