Why is this word used instead of the normal word for buy?
You can buy a cat or a dog. But you can take them without paying.
You can also find a dog on the street. How can you buy such animal without any seller?
We also say that pets are our friends. We do not buy the friends.
завести машину = start a car
завести собаку = get/have a dog
