I just stumbled across an interesting article on the Idaten kyousou in a lesson. While I do get the general gist of the article, something at the end of the article kind of boggles my mind.

From what I can gather from the article:
The Idaten Kyousou seems to be a big race oriented in which a lot of people will run towards places that are located at a higher elevation. It seems that this is related to the events following the big tsunami. During these tsunamis people also had to run towards really high places, because of the obvious risk of drowning if they did not.
Then at the very end they let a 23-year-old male talk and he says:
「津波で亡くなる人がいなくなってほしいと思いながら走りました」
It somehow seems like he is saying that he wants the casualties of the tsunami to disappear, but why? Is he just a generally stone-cold guy or is he saying something else?
