What’s the function of ‘zu’ in this sentence?
Literally: The lessons are difficult to understand.
‘zu verstehen’ means ‘to understand’
The 2nd or 3rd verb in a sentence needs ‘zu’ when the 1st one was not a modal verb.
Das ist schwer zu verstehen.
Wir brauchen Zeit zu lernen.
But with modal verbs (without ‘zu’):
Es kann schwer sein.
Man muss fleisig lernen.
Das soll etwas bedeuten.
