What does “Die” refer to in this context? Does it refer to “that which you shine upon”;. ie, the earth?
It does refer to “those (for) whom you shine”, which would be the inhabitants of the earth. “Welchen” = “Whom” in this case.
If it was to mean “that which you shine upon” it would have to say something like “das, welches du beleuchtest”
