I am trying to understand why the writer used “als” in this sentence: Sie machen den Eindruck, als sollte man sie lieber nicht reizen.

I believe it is simply “as if”

Sie machen den Eindruck, als (as if ) sollte man sie lieber nicht reizen.

They give the impression, as if, one should not irritate them.
