I believe this phrase means “for father or mother’s birthday”, but I’m stuck on why 過 is there. Can anyone explain? Would it mean something different if it was excluded? Would it have meant the same with or without 過?

過 is the verb. They’re having/celebrating or crossing over their birthday.
- spend (度过）
- celebrate
The phrase is “when a father or mother have a birthday” taking out the guo4 (過) would be like taking out the “have”.
Thank you everyone. I never heard of that meaning for 過 before; I’ll keep that in mind. I’ve learned it as passing over/by something physically, or “have ever” done something, but not as celebrating/having.
