Why is there a 是 here?

可是 is a single word meaning “but.” Unfortunate that there is a space there…

dang completely didn’t see that lol

also i wanted to ask you how did you get used to translating 的 e.g 我的妈妈 can mean my mother, or you can read it backwards, mother of mine, 同学 们 的 榜样 can mean ‘class mate’s role model’ or ‘role model of the classmates’, usually i read it in order but sometimes it makes sense reading it backwards. What is your strategy?

Well you will get basically the same meaning reading forwards or backwards. So I would prefer the apostrophe-s interpretation because I wouldn’t want to be reading backwards if I don’t have to.

It’s true that translating words out of order may get you a more natural English sentence, but over time you won’t feel a need to translate into English. So you won’t have a strategy, or need one, because you’ll be so comfortable with Chinese structure and wording tendencies, that you’ll understand a sentence (or at least parts of a sentence) long before you could give an English translation of it.

that sounds so cool, yeh i also prefer the apostrophe-s but i guess like you said you will get accustomed, hopefully, just need more exposure.
