Can you explain this sentence please?

“Pour les uns, ce n’est ouvert que le matin tandis que pour d’autres, mais pas la majorité, l’aprés-midi est également travaillé”.

-What does les uns mean?
-What is the grammar related to “ce n’est ouvert”? Surely, there needs to be a “pas” after the verb ‘ouvert’? Also, what is n’est? If “ce n’est” means 'it is" why didn’t they just write “c’est” instead.

  • Why is there a ‘n’ before the verb “est” if the sentence isn’t negative as stated in google translate?

1 - les uns … les autres : some … others
2 - ne … que Je n’ai que deux euros. I have only two euros.
ce n’est ouvert que le matin = c’est ouvert seulement le matin
3 - ne before a verb that starts with a vowel becomes n’

negation ne …pas
je ne dors pas / je ne travaille pas
n’ … pas
je n’écoute pas / je n’ose pas

Think of “ne … que” as “nothing… but”: “Je n’ai que deux euros” → “I’ve got nothing but two euros”. (suggested in another thread by another Lingq user)

Yes thanks alot! Now I understand another grammar construction. That being the ‘n…(verb) que’. I’ll remember it as’only’ or ‘nothing but’. This really helps :slight_smile:
