You are hearing something like “keh-lay” in “Quel est” (What is…), because often the sound of the last consonant in a word is carried on to the first vowel of the next. Just like in English when we really pronounce “an apple” as “annapple” naturally.
If each word were pronounced individually, it would be unnatural, robotic speech.

Another French example: “comment allez-vous” sounds roughly like, “commoh tahlay-voo”: the ‘t’ at the end of ‘comment’ is dropped and joined to the starting vowel ‘a’ in ‘allez-vous’.

We just have to get used to it :slight_smile:
