“A ces mots le corbeau ne se sent pas de joie” …In this sentence it seems like it is saying the raven does not feel joy, but when Iooked up the english version of this story it says “Hearing these words the crow felt great joy”.

Why is this?

Of course it’s the same meaning that in English version!
“le corbeau ne se sent pas de joie” mean that the raven is so overwhelm by joy, that he can’t even fell himself.

As a drug addict can’t fell his body, as he goes into ecstasies

Wonderful and beautiful piece of literature. You have to keep in mind that the French is old-fashioned, and is bound to the poetry rules. It seems to me that the English version you give is good. As sodium say, “Hearing these words the crow is overwhelmed by joy” conveys the idea.

In more contemporary French, we would say:
“À ces mots, le corbeau est transporté de joie.”

I hope this helps.

Congratulations for studying La Fontaine. It is quite challenging (but once again, so beautiful.)
