Does anyone know what "worn off" means? Thanks! :-)

Does anyone know what “worn off” means? Thanks!

Here you can find an excellent explanation of the meaning and differences between wear out/down/away/off:

“worn” comes from the verb “wear” and the expression is “wear off” which means “gradually disappear”.

Example: The pain in my hand is starting to wear off (The pain in my hand is gradually disappearing)

wear off: become less intense; fade; dissipate; disappear over time

If you have a few alcoholic drinks, you become inebriated. After you stop drinking, the effect of the alcohol on your brain wears off as time passes.

If someone doesn’t apply fresh paint to the wood on the exterior of their house, the paint on their house will wear off as time passes and the wood will rot.

The strangeness will wear off. As time passes, the strange feeling will no longer be felt.

The strangeness of the language has worn off. The language no longer sounds strange to me.
