Plus, it’s usually used when something has happened slowly or over an extended period of time.

So if you play football as a hobby but over time are playing less and less, you would say ‘well that died out’ or ‘that slowly died out’.

If a species goes extinct, we would say ‘died out’ but if they all got rounded up and killed we wouldn’t use that term.
