“I normally drive to the nearby mountains.”
According to my dictionary, “nearby” means “not far away” or “close”. I don’t think “nearby” in the above sentence can be replaced by “near”. That is, you are not supposed to say “the near mountains”. I think you can say “the mountains in the near distance”.
