Not sure about what “ao serão” means. Does it indicate a time of the day?

Here in Brazil we usually use the expression “fazer serão” meaning “to work overtime”. “Serão” can also refer to the first hours of the night, i.e. the period between dinner and going to sleep.

In that particular sentence “ao serão” refers to “the period between dinner and going to sleep”, as Julio said.
