Quick question Why is "um" after "rund" here? I've seen

Quick question

Why is “um” after “rund” here? I’ve seen this a few times before and just ignored it but thought I would ask the friendly Germans here on the forum.

This is the sentence.
"Außerdem gibt es Führungen und Vorlesungen für und Erwachsene rund um die Dinosaurier.
I would translate this as "and adults around the dinosaurs. But why the “rund um”?

‘Um’ verwendet man oft nach ‘rund’ für die Verstärkung, zum Beispiel: “Die Reise rund um die Welt”

If you use “rund” without the preposition “um” it means “round”. “rund um” means “around”.

“Um” can be used in many cases. In this case it is a preposition with accussative. Read more: http://canoo.net/services/OnlineGrammar/Wort/Praeposition/Kasus/Akkusativ.html

You can say: “Sie machen eine Reise um die Welt”.
The “rund” is an adverb here: Duden | rund | Rechtschreibung, Bedeutung, Definition, Herkunft . It explains that that samething is going ‘round’, in this case the “world” is round.

I hope this helps.

danke

Okay. Thanks for clearing that up.
