Dieser Satz ist interessant aber ich bin nicht sicher, was es auf Englisch bedeutet. Kannst du mir helfen? “It is at the mercy of the hail”???

Man muss den ganzen Kontext haben, um richtig zu übersetzen.
Es ist etwa: Something (i.e. grain) was unprotected before (=towards, against) the hail.

When it is person, you may say “at the mercy of”; when it is a thing, you say rather “in the face of”.

Schutzlos = ohne Schutz = without a shelter
ausgeliefert sein = at the mercy of
“ausgeliefert sein” is here used in the sense of “ausgesetzt sein” = to be exposed to
Without a shelter it was at the mercy of the hail.
or:
It was exposed to the hail without a shelter.
