English rendering? I do not understand this phrase: Da meint

English rendering? I do not understand this phrase: Da meint es jemand etwas zu gut mit uns. Someone means something good for us.???

‘es gut mit jemandem meinen’- to treat someone well, to wish somebody well.
The translation is: Somebody treats too kindly to us (ironically).

Thanks for the clarification. I did not pick up on the irony.

Somebody is being too kind to us (in other words, they overwhelm us with XYZ)

Thanks for the clarity. I did not pick up on the “sarcasm or irony” of the statement. Have you any tips or is it all in the translation?

In Vera’s example the expression is used ironically. It is used quite often this way. If it is raining cats and dogs: “Da meint Petrus es etwas zu gut mit uns.” (As children we were told that St. Peter up in heaven was responsible for the weather here on earth.)

Hidden disapproval: “Du meinst es zu gut mit ihm.” This usage is rarer.
